INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

THESE TRANSITIONAL PIECES HAVE US EXCITED FOR AUTUMN

For all the affection we pour on summer style, the world often has other ideas (unwanted social plans, flustered work commutes and unpredictable weather being some of them). So out go the pretty dresses and inconveniently tiny handbags – in come the overstuffed totes and sweaty T-shirts. There’s nothing wrong with a casual outfit, of course, but blistering heat and last-minute downpours can instantly throw off a look.

So, bear with us when we say this, but we’re actually quite excited for autumn. If you’re dubious about a change in seasons, we understand, but these transitional pieces are sure to turn your head. From statement jackets to versatile shoe combos, keep scrolling for the only items you’ll need to nail cool-weather style before summer’s over.

SUITS AND SANDALS

Shoes are the best place to start when it comes to in-between dressing. A change in footwear can instantly shake up a look, so don’t sleep on the transformative power of a sandal. Open-toe shoes have dominated summer’s runways, and even as the days get cooler our toes are going nowhere. Pairing flat sandals with an oversized suit screams transitional polish – elevated, but still casual thanks to the lack of formal footwear, this combo is the first thing we’d reach for when the sky looks overcast.

A SUEDE JACKET

Jackets can be the hardest part of shifting weather. Just when you’ve nailed a warm-weather lineup, in comes a temperature drop to force an outfit pivot. There’s nothing worse than covering up a thoughtfully curated ‘fit with last year’s puffer (for lack of better options). So getting ahead of the game is crucial. Suede is the perfect in-between fabric for its rich, warming texture and lighter tones. This boxy blazer is great for throwing on at the last minute, and there’s plenty of faux options to match your needs.

WIDE-LEG TROUSERS AND FLIP FLOPS

Another footwear combo we can’t get enough of? Flip flops and oversized trousers. You’ve probably already rolled this look out at some point, but swapping jeans or shorts for a sharp wool-blend pant is your shortcut to transitional elegance. Keep the flip flops simple and understated to balance the structure of your outfit, and finish with a simple T-shirt and leather bag for a look that will have your fellow commuters envious.

A TRENCH COAT

Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s going to rain – a lot. Even at the height of summer a torrential downpour is customary, but it’s still too hot for The Big Coat. Opting for something lightweight and timelessly stylish might sound impossible, but the trench coat has proved its worth year after year. If you fancy mixing it up, try a shorter silhouette (perfect for rushing around), or a deeper colour palette which pairs beautifully with a simple white tank and denim.

BERMUDAS AND BALLET FLATS

It might be cooling down but there’s no need to pack in the shorts. If anything, 2025 has shown us that longer styles are all the better – making bermudas and jorts your favourite transitional companions. Pairing these baggy silhouettes with a dainty ballerina flat is the balance of feminine and masculine we’re always looking to strike. Just swap out your mesh pumps for sturdier leather and you’re ready to step into autumn with all the stylish enthusiasm of a bermuda-and-ballerina-wearing fashion virtuoso (okay, it looks far more understated than it sounds).
