YOUR NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE, SIMPLIFIED

Bottle and dropper with red liquid

There’s no better time to lock into your skincare routine than at night. It’s not always time-efficient to spend an hour vigorously layering and playing aesthetician with high-tech tools, but there are benefits to using a few more products in the evenings. There are four core stages for an effective skincare routine (for both am and pm): cleansing, prepping, treating and moisturising. The evening is also the ideal time for masks, heavy treatments and exfoliation. We’ve simplified the art of the nighttime skincare routine so anyone can master it, whether you’re a skincare newbie or a veteran.
HOW DO NIGHT ROUTINES DIFFER FROM MORNING ROUTINES?
There isn't really a cut-and-dry answer to that, as your routine is largely based on your skin concerns and daily schedule. As a rule of thumb, your skin is less vulnerable to environmental factors like 9-5 stress, weather changes and allergens during the night – allowing it to shift its focus on repairing and regenerating. This means night routines are better for heavier products and more elaborate routines you might only dedicate to pamper days.

CLEANSE: THE BEST OIL-BASED AND WATER-BASED CLEANSERS

Cleanser bottles

If you want a deeply penetrating session, double cleansing is the way to go. A common myth is that double cleansing only matters if you wear makeup throughout the day, but it's simply not true. Your skin builds up layers of dirt, grime and sweat regardless of your glam status. Start with an oil-based cleanser to thoroughly remove excess sebum, sunscreen and clean out any clogged pores, and follow up with a water-based cleanser.

PREP: THE BEST TONERS, ESSENCES AND AMPOULES

Four toners

Toners do a multitude of good things for your skin. They can help balance out your skin’s pH levels, remove any makeup or dirt left after cleansing, hydrate, soothe, and even work as chemical exfoliants. Speaking of the latter, this is best done at night – exfoliating with a toner in the morning can often make your skin more sensitive to sun damage. Essences and ampoules – AKA slightly thicker toners – can also be applied at this stage to load up on hydration throughout the night.

TREAT: THE BEST SERUMS

Four serums

Now’s the time to incorporate any serums or specialised ointments that target specific skin issues. If you’re tackling stubborn acne or a hormonal breakout, a spot or acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide can help. More general serums like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and retinol would be applied here, too. If you use several in one routine, the general rule is to go from thinnest to thickest. Avoid layering conflicting ingredients or too many serums in one routine – they could do your skin more harm than good.

MOISTURISE: THE BEST NIGHT MOISTURISERS

Four moisturisers

The final stage is sealing in all that nourishment. A good nighttime moisturiser is worth investing in, as they’re typically formulated with more intense ingredients to promote maximum hydration as you doze. Although night moisturisers are usually thicker than daytime ones, matching your moisturiser to your skin type is still recommended. E.g. Oily skin = a thinner gel-based product, and dry skin = richer and heavier creams. If you want to be extra, you can even layer moisturisers – a potent hydration hack for cold weather.

Face masks are an age-old way to pamper your skin with power-packed ingredients, usually a few times a week. There are many different types of masks, but the most popular are clay masks and sheet masks. Clay masks – designed to be applied straight after cleansing and being rinsed off – draw impurities out of your pores and result in a refreshed glow. Sheet masks – which were popularised by K-beauty – are ultra-dense serum blends made to soak into your skin for 5-25 minutes and be fully absorbed.
