DEMYSTIFYING: MOISTURISERS FOR OILY SKIN
By Symone Keisha, 30 July 2025
With so many skincare ingredients out there, like retinol and actives, it can be tricky to figure out what each one does, especially when it depends on your skin type. So, on the agenda today: moisturisers for oily skin. If you’re thinking of adding a new moisturiser to your skincare routine, or if you’re already using one but you’re not sure if you’ve chosen correctly – keep reading. We’re here to tell you everything you need to know, from what oily skin is to the best moisturisers to combat oily skin types.
SO, WHAT IS OILY SKIN?
There are four skin types: dry, normal, oily and combination. Oily skin is when the sebaceous glands produce more oil than the skin typically needs, resulting in enlarged pores and excess oil across the face, especially the T-zone area. Due to this, oily skin types are prone to blemishes, blackheads and acne.

SHOULD I BE USING MOISTURISER IF I HAVE OILY SKIN?
The answer is a resounding yes! While some people think that you should go sans moisturiser with oily skin, that’s a complete myth, and all skin types require moisturiser. Avoiding moisturiser only worsens the situation because your skin will become dry, and in response, your sebaceous glands produce even more oil to make up for it.

WHAT TYPE OF MOISTURISER SHOULD I USE?
While rich and luxurious creams might be tempting, those are the ones you should be leaving on the bathroom shelf. Instead, opt for super-lightweight iterations when looking for a face cream for oily skin. Water-based formulas should always be at the top of your list with their hydrating properties, and gel moisturisers are great too – they stop your skin from looking shiny. When making your decision, always opt for a product that’s non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores.
WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD I BE LOOKING OUT FOR?
Managing oily and combination skin is made easier with ingredients that absorb excess oil and moisturise all in one. Skincare heroes like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and niacinamide boost the skin barrier by hydrating, nourishing and balancing the skin’s oil production, so look for moisturisers that incorporate any of the three. You can also opt for face creams that contain oil-absorbing ingredients like silica and starches from rice or corn. These absorb excess oil and mattify the skin to ensure you aren’t too shiny or greasy throughout the day.
