A VINTAGE RESELLER TELLS US HOW TO SOURCE THE BEST PIECES

Our wardrobes are hungry for unique pieces. Vintage finds and archival gems stand out in a sea of sameness – and there’s one man at the centre of the renaissance. Kieran Bradlaugh founded Second Wave Vintage – a hugely successful brand sourcing archival streetwear – from his bedroom in Bristol. Now his artfully curated range of jackets, trainers and accessories have amassed a cult following. The most recent stop on his journey to world domination? ASOS. From his sourcing process to the most coveted pieces now on-site, we caught up with Kieran to learn more about Second Wave Vintage.

What inspired you to start Second Wave Vintage?
It started during university. I was low on money at the time and began reselling vintage pieces I’d found locally and online. I’d always been interested in fashion, but it was shopping vintage that gave me access to more quality and character at an affordable price.

You’ve found lots of incredible pieces since the brand started. Have you got any standout favourites?
A 1995 Stone Island Tela Stella reversible jacket that I picked up for £30 a few years back. After authenticating and cleaning it, it sold for over £1000.

What’s your sourcing process, and how has it changed as the brand has grown?

It’s a mix really. I’ve used online auctions, second-hand platforms and long-term supplier relationships. People see the nice clothes at the end of it, but Second Wave Vintage wouldn’t be where it is without all the research and analysis that goes into it. I’ve spent so much time looking into markets and trends to find the right pieces. This attention to detail has also allowed me to form trusted relationships with specialist suppliers who understand what I’m looking for and ensure everything is carefully selected, authenticated, and quality checked.

Do you have any advice for someone just entering the world of vintage fashion?

Always prioritise authenticity and condition. Time spent researching brand-specific details like serial codes, stitching patterns and materials is never time wasted. Just be patient and the perfect pieces will follow.

What inspired the name 'Second Wave Vintage'?

'Second Wave' represents the second life of clothing. It’s a reflection of our appreciation for giving high-quality garments a second chance – extending their lifespan and opening them up to new generations.

What are the biggest trends dominating vintage fashion right now?

Tech wear and functional outwear, for sure. Anything with performance built into the design, like weatherproof fabrics and multiple pockets – as well as asymmetrical closures and unusual fastenings. People are looking for more statement silhouettes this season, and plaid patterns continue to perform well across the board. There’s also a growing demand for western styles: think cowboy boots, denim and leather.

Have you faced any challenges since starting Second Wave?

Oh yeah, of course. I think the biggest challenge is how quickly trends rise and fall. Something can be extremely popular one minute and drop off the next. But it’s taught me to ignore the short-lived hype cycle and focus on timeless, quality pieces. Building a balanced portfolio of pieces that speak to trending moments as well as long-term tastes is the key to a lasting vintage business.

Any final styling tips for adding vintage pieces to your rotation?

Let one standout vintage piece lead your outfit and keep everything else simple. Pairing archive outerwear or statement trousers with clean basics like white tees and hoodies keeps a look balanced and wearable. It’s all about combining character and history with the simplicity of an everyday wardrobe. That’s what’ll make you style feel current and interesting at the end of the day.
