THE MOST SURPRISING LOOKS FROM THIS YEAR'S BAFTAs

A duffel coat on the red carpet – what’s more British than that? This weekend, the BAFTAs studded awards season with another crown jewel. Celebrating the best performances across TV and film, stars descended on London in their finery. Alongside Paddington Bear’s duffel coat, this year’s ceremony delivered plenty of surprises. From unexpected wins to moments of PDA (Paul and Gracie, we're looking at you), we all went to bed with plenty to talk about – but it was the fashion that kept us up all night. Whether it was Tilda Swinton’s tux or Teyana Taylor’s trench, keep scrolling for an up-close account of the night’s best looks.

WUNMI MOSAKU

The BAFTAs featured a lot of black gowns and suits, but amid the sea of monochrome, a few looks stood out. Wunmi Mosaku, who took home the prize for Best Supporting Actress, stunned in a cobalt-blue fringe dress (a shade also donned by Lead Actress winner Jesse Buckley). Layers of exaggerated tassels and a chic neckline made for a striking – if unexpected – silhouette. A sign of colourful things to come, and proof that going against the grain is usually rewarding.

LITTLE SIMZ

Queen of alternative tailoring, Little Simz held a firm grip on her red-carpet crown with this look. Equal parts surprising and sophisticated, the cinched overcoat feels like an aptly British combo of the blazer and evening dress. Paired with understated accessories and sweet kitten heels, feminine elements are peppered throughout the structured silhouette. If you’re not one for a floor-sweeping gown, this ensemble is worth filing for inspo.

The trench is well and truly back – and Teyana Taylor has brought it into eveningwear territory. Part dress, part coat, this cinched and ruched show of deliciousness was one of the night’s most memorable outfits. Everything from the dramatic collar to the perfectly sculpted train made a lasting impression. We’re all guilty of foregoing a coat in cold weather, but this has us thinking we should pack one for our formal outings, too.

ERIN DOHERTY

Star of Adolescence and 1000 Blows, Erin Doherty knows how to make a statement. Despite brushing shoulders with some of Hollywood’s biggest hitters, it was Erin’s architectural dress that made the most waves. A dramatic plunging neckline and barely-there straps are balanced by a showstopping skirt – inspired by the folds in a 17th-century ruff. It might not be the most practical choice, but this look provides plenty of inspo where structural dressing is concerned.

EMMA STONE

Jumping on the black dress brigade, Emma Stone made an understated case in this simple halter neck. The leading actress has been on a glowing streak – both professionally and fashionably – and this latest ensemble didn’t buck the trend. We love the uber simple accessories: just a thin silver bracelet, open-toe heels and a soft up-do. Each detail let Emma’s flawless makeup shine and the soft cascade of black fabric was tailored to perfection. It's giving effortless elegance.
