PADDINGTON THE MUSICAL
If you fancy partaking in a wholesome activity this December, the theatre is your best bet. Nothing feels quite as festive as bundling into a packed auditorium and watching a show come to life – not least when it features old favourites like Paddington Bear. After the incredible success of the movie franchise, our familiar fuzzy friend is taking to the West End in a critically acclaimed stage production. With music and lyrics by McFly’s Tom Fletcher, and a seriously impressive animatronic puppet, this is the all-singing, all-dancing hug you didn’t know you needed.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Have you spent all winter fantasising about a Christmas market, and then never setting foot in one? Same here. The sheer volume of options is frankly overwhelming, and finding one that’s worth your time (no overpriced, watery mulled wine thank you) can be a full-time job. Well, we’ve done the hard work for you. London’s best festive markets can be divided into two categories: the OTT and the understated. For the former, nowhere beats Winter Wonderland – complete with festive rides, live music and enough food to sink a ship. But if you don’t fancy battling crowds, the Southbank Centre promises independent stalls, warming food and a slower pace of festive cheer (those views of the Thames are an added bonus).
THAMES LIDO
Speaking of the Thames, consider a day trip this December. Whether you’re based in the city or just fancy an alternative option for your festive gatherings, Thames Lido in Reading is a gorgeous wellness escape. You can swim in the heated pool, opt for a sauna or hot tub, and even book a massage package. Plus, the entire place has been artfully decorated with festive lights and seasonal florals. Just over an hour from central London, this wintry excursion is well worth booking in advance.
THE HOLIDAY IN CONCERT – 7 DECEMBER
It wouldn’t be December without mention of at least one festive film. And in what has become a viral annual event, some of the most enchanting Christmas movies are available to watch alongside live music. This year, you can head to the Eventim Apollo to watch The Holiday, complete with a concert orchestra playing in perfect harmony with the full running of the film. This sells out fast, so if it sounds up your street, you’d better grab a ticket quickly.
