UNPACKING AUTUMN’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE SHIRT
By Flo Bellinger, 26 October 2025
With the advent of autumn, fashion becomes a bit of a free-for-all. There’s the knitwear fanatics, the ‘big coat’ connoisseurs, and of course the post-fashion week analysers. And amongst all the argyle and knee-high boots, it’s easy to feel fatigued by it all. This influx of fashionable fixations also means the relatively understated items in our wardrobe tend to slip through the cracks. But suffice to say, that’s not the case this season. Thankfully one familiar staple has cemented itself as autumn’s darling: the shirt.

Forget belts. The latest thing around everyone’s waist is a checked shirt. Unlikely, yes. But effective? Absolutely. The layered effect of a checkered shirt provides ample texture and movement to any outfit – without the need for a huge investment. We love how these styles look when poking out from underneath a bomber jacket – but they also look great worn as intended. With heritage prints enjoying a major moment this season, there’s no shortage of reasons to whip out a tartan number. And when cut in a cosy flannel, it makes for the perfect cold-weather layer.

CINCHED SHIRTS

Button-down shirts have been a wardrobe staple since time immemorial, but despite their simple design they’re not always the easiest to wear. The billowing fabric can often overwhelm a look – and despite oversized styles looking great on some, they’re not a catch-all for a showstopping outfit. It’s been music to many ears, then, that cinched designs are dominating runways and roadsides this autumn. Creating an architectural shape with exaggerated shoulders and a taut waist, these bring the perfect level of corporate couture to your everyday wardrobe.

EMBELLISHED SHIRTS

Another way to amp up your shirting roster is with a little embellishment. These eye-catching styles are perfect for party season, and will come in handy when a packed social calendar inevitably strains the wardrobe. While sequins may be a familiar go-to at this time of year, there’s no need to go all showgirl with your button-downs. Opt for your usual silhouette with the addition of subtle details – like this crinkle floral piece from ARRANGE. If you’re struggling for inspiration, these are our new favourite ways to elevate a simple pair for jeans.

DENIM SHIRTS

Speaking of jeans, denim options are a standout among shirts for autumn this year. Given their sturdy fabric and heavier style, it’s easy to see why. And there’s no shortage of shades to choose from either, so no need to step out in a Canadian tuxedo if you don’t feel like it. Denim naturally lends itself to a boxy fit, so we love these options for more architectural dressing – but seasonal tones like brown and burgundy also pair perfectly with this classic texture.

BOW SHIRTS

You may have noticed preppy pieces are earning top marks right now – from pleated skirts to loafers and socks. It’s not unusual for ‘back to school’ style to dominate once summer ends, but if you fancy indulging in a less familiar way, bows are a great choice. Shirting with knot details feel both feminine and delightfully tailored, striking a balance between softness and structure that most clothing items can only dream of.
