THE BEAT BREAKDOWN: TOASTY GLAM

We may already be a month into autumn (and fast approaching winter), but the longing for summer can still be felt all around. It's cold out, but there’s a lack of winter coats on trains, friends are already planning their winter-sun getaways, and there’s an inability to let the last of that summer glow go. The latter has bred the latest makeup trend to know: toasty glam. The look gained popularity in the summer thanks to Hailey Bieber's signature sun-kissed glam, but we'll be wearing these toasty tones well into the winter months.

‘As we step into winter, toasted makeup is the ultimate beauty trend sweeping across social media,’ says ASOS Makeup Manager, Yasmine Syed. This time last year, MUAs and influencers were all about cool-toned, glittery makeup to complement the cold, but right now, looking like a bronzed doughnut is the move. ‘This colder period is focused on creating a warm, effortlessly radiant and sun-kissed feel to the skin with the perfect blend of luxurious terracotta and brown tones.’ No matter your complexion, we’ve broken down all the steps to achieving the perfect bronzed beat below.

STEP 1: BASE

As it's a summer-influenced trend, toasted makeup doesn’t require a full base. Instead, focus on preserving your skin’s natural luminosity. Drop the foundation and pick up a tinted moisturiser or BB cream, blend it in with a brush (use a stippling motion to get a finish that imitates the skin's natural texture) and conceal any areas you want any extra coverage on. To really max out your glow, precede this step with glow drops or a skin elixir.

STEP 2: BRONZE

Bronzer is the key to toasty glam. Base products can sometimes leave the skin looking one-dimensional, but bronzer lets you add the 'life' back in. Preferably, but depending on your skin's undertones, choose a warm-toned cream bronzer (or a bronzy blush) for the ultimate toastiness. Apply it with a light touch, blending it in across your cheekbones and up towards your temples – use your fingertips to really melt the product into the skin. You can leave it there for a dewy glow, or go in with powder bronzer on a big fluffy brush for an extra sun-kissed finish.

STEP 3: EYES

You really want your eyeshadow to blend seamlessly with your skin for that melted look. An easy way to achieve this is to let your bronzer/blush double as eyeshadow (perfect if you’re tight on eyeshadow options or want to speed up the process, too). Again, choose warm-toned terracotta and rusty shades for optimum results. While blending eyeshadow is easier in powder form, a liquid blush gives that glazed-doughnut effect we all know and love. If you want to go the extra mile, add a shimmery copper to the centre of your eyelids, and tightline with a deep chocolate shade. For lashes, brown mascara or ghost lashes only.

For light to medium skin tones, Rimmel Cappuccino is the ultimate lipliner for this look – we know you've seen it all over socials already. For deeper skin tones, Maybelline Cross The Line looks incredible, too. To apply, line and fill the lips about two-thirds of the way. And while you can go matte if you wish, toasty makeup is all about enhancing your natural beauty, so a light touch of lip gloss or lipstick will go a long way – use Jade and Hailey's juicy, moisturised lip combos for inspo.

Being toasted is a lifestyle to us, not just a trend – and that means your manicure needs to match the vibe, too. Brown nails are very autumn-coded, but shimmers and fun designs add a nice touch of glam (and nod to festive season). The options are endless – you could even do a brown French tip for a more low-key but elevated look.
