DEMYSTIFYING: MOISTURISERS FOR DRY SKIN

With so many skincare ingredients out there, like retinol and hyaluronic acid, it can be tricky to figure out what each one does, especially when it depends on your skin type. So, on the agenda today: moisturisers for dry skin. If you’re thinking of adding a new moisturiser to your skincare routine, or if you’re already using one but you’re not sure if you’ve chosen correctly – keep reading. We’re here to tell you everything you need to know, from what dry skin is to the best moisturisers to combat dry skin types.

SO, WHAT IS DRY SKIN?

There are four skin types: dry, normal, oily and combination. Dry skin is caused by a weakened protective skin barrier, which leads to a loss of moisture in the skin's upper layer. Dry skin tends to appear flaky and tight – severe cases of dry skin can lead to inflammation and redness. While dry skin can be genetic, other factors like cold weather and very hot showers can contribute to dry skin, too.

SHOULD I USE MOISTURISER IF I HAVE DRY SKIN?

Absolutely! As dry skin is susceptible to water loss, the best thing you can do is layer on moisturiser that has hydrating ingredients to replace what your skin has lost. You can also enlist the help of serums, mists and oils to work alongside your most trusted moisturiser to tackle parched skin from all angles.

Demystifying: moisturisers for dry skin

WHAT TYPE OF MOISTURISER SHOULD I USE?

With a dryer skin type, this is your chance to really indulge in thicker creams and balms, and you can afford to use a thick layer twice daily (after cleansing), too. To really amp up the hydration, apply your moisturiser when your skin is damp – look to serums and face mists before applying your cream and consider topping your moisturiser with a face oil to seal it all in. Additional step? Choose a super-thick night cream to restore and revitalise your skin while you sleep.

WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD I BE LOOKING OUT FOR?

Look to powerhouses like hyaluronic acid (it holds up to 1000 times its weight in water) and niacinamide (it aids in trans-epidermal water loss, or TEWL) for hydration. Glycerin and aloe vera are humectants, which means they pull moisture from the environment into your skin while soothing and nourishing any inflammation – also a great choice. When it comes to face creams, opt for formulas with ceramides, as these barrier-boosting lipids seal moisture in while keeping harmful aggressors out. Bonus points for skin-quenching ingredients like squalene, shea butter and oat-based formulas too.

WHAT INGREDIENTS SHOULD I AVOID?

While lightweight creams and gel formulas might seem appealing, especially in the summer months, we recommend giving them a miss as they probably won't provide the level of hydration you're looking for. Quick tip: if your face cream sinks in too quickly, it's probably not thick enough, so make friends with richer formulas instead. It's also worth noting that products containing fragrance, harsh chemicals or alcohol might irritate dry skin and possibly strip away its natural oils. A patch test is always advised, especially with products you're unsure of.
