HOW TO STYLE THE NEW BALANCE 471s ACCORDING TO OUR ASOS INSIDERS

On these days, ASOS Insiders Mary-Rose, Bella, Cris and Barri-Allison refuse to dial down their style, and you can thank the just-landed New Balance 471 trainers for that. We chatted with our Insiders about just that, as well as how they're styling the 471s this summer.

Hey Mary-Rose! Can you describe your personal style in three words?
Oversized, comfortable, elevated.

Phone-free days... we all need them! What does a typical no-scroll day look like for you?

A walk to my fave matcha spot – I order an iced oat caramel matcha, then sit in the sun outside the coffee shop and read a book. I’m currently reading Blue Sisters and I love it! Sometimes I do a bit of journaling – I’m really into manifestation and find I journal best when I’ve put my phone away. Once I’ve done a bit of that, I’ll go for a walk along the canal to get my steps in.

We’ll be trying out that matcha order. Where have you worn your 471s in the past week?
I’ve been wearing mine on the way to my reformer pilates classes. I pair them with either my flared leggings or normal leggings & white socks.

Who do you look to for style inspo?
Sometimes it’s people I see on the street, but I’m forever on Pinterest – I love searching for inspo on there.

Bella, we've got to know... what’s in your phone-free survival kit?
A book, suncream, sunglasses and my AirPods.

Where will you soon be headed off to in your 471s?
They’re such a multi-purpose trainer, so I’ll be wearing them to work and then taking them away with me on my staycation.

We love your style. How are you styling the 471 as the weather gets warmer?
I love wearing them with a striped boxer short for a preppy vibe! I think they would also look super cute with jorts or a mini dress.

Tell us a fashion era from the past that you’re obsessed with.
The roaring 20s – the outfits were stunning and people really dressed up! I wish we did it more nowadays.

Cris, can you walk us through your perfect phone-free day?
I always start with a morning walk and a coffee, and end up in one of my favourite parks. There's usually a flower market stop, followed by a quick lunch where I read my book and soak up the sun. My phone-free day is very simple: it's about enjoying the little things that I tend to forget about when I have a busy routine. On my way back home I love to browse a magazine shop and treat myself.

Give a piece of style advice we all need to hear.
Always wear clothing that fits, no matter how boring it might look. One piece of clothing that fits well is worth more than 100 items which may seem more fun but aren’t the right fit.

What's a foolproof everyday outfit you'd wear with the 471s?
I’d pair them with a midi skirt, a white tank and a great pair of earrings! Keeping it simple and timeless.

What’s one iconic fashion moment from the past that you’d love to have experienced?
Tom Ford at Gucci! Can’t choose a moment, more like a whole period of time, but the designers were incredible and Kate Moss was everywhere! What a time to be alive.

Hey Barri-Allison, where will the New Balance 471s be taking you this week?
This week I'll be in the office. Working for a fashion company means the office doubles up as a runway! The 471s will complete my office looks, so I can *werk* at work.

We can tell you love the 90s from your style. Why is that?
The nostalgia! There were no smartphones – we all called our friends on their house phones, and our mums at work. We were outside more. Music videos were like movies. It was just a peak time for community and culture.

How are you adapting the 471s for your summer wardrobe?
I’m a big denim skirt fan! Paired with the blue-on-blue 471s? There’s no better combination. And with stripes being a summer staple, styling them with a striped top is a must.

Which influencer has been feeding you serious ‘fitspo lately?
I get a lot of style inspo from Pinterest and TikTok, but I’ve been obsessing over Sierra Rena recently. I’m in awe of how well she pairs colours, patterns and accessories together. It’s unexpected but always works!
