It’s cold! In the northern hemisphere, at least. Bar a few middle-of-the-road days, the temperature has officially dropped – and so have our autumn wishlists. Despite more challenging weather patterns, our social calendars are no less packed post-summer. That means a simple (and durable) wardrobe formula that lasts through any forecast is key – think weatherproof trainers with plenty of style mileage, jackets that warm and wow, and sweatshirts made for lounging and living in.
#1: WEATHERPROOF TRAINERS

A strong footwear lineup is a mark of great style – and practicality. Whether it’s loafers for formal outings or mules for summer strolls, a carousel of timeless shoes will always serve you well. Weatherproof styles become top priority when autumn rolls around. But finding a pair that look as good as they feel isn’t always easy. Thank goodness for Salomon, then. The activewear brand has become a cult favourite thanks to its weatherproof trainers and innovative designs. ‘This neon pair is the perfect way to inject colour into a muted autumnal wardrobe,’ says Charis – and we couldn’t agree more.
#2: A VERSATILE KNIT

Another crucial investment for in-between weather is great knitwear. Jumpers are easy to layer under jackets or wear alone when the temperature's unpredictable. Given you’ll be throwing them on regularly, it’s important to find something you won’t tire of – simple enough to re-wear, yet interesting enough to mix up your daily 'fits. This red jumper strikes the perfect balance. ‘Not only does it incorporate the season's trending colours,’ says Charis, ‘but the classic cable knit is a timeless wardrobe staple you can lean on year after year.’
#3: A REALLY GOOD JACKET

We might be relying on jumpers for the next few weeks, but at some point, the big coats and jackets will have to come out. The annual hunt for these seasonal staples can feel daunting, but get it right, and you’ll have the base of every winter look sorted. Charis’ choice? This brown borg-lined number from ASOS DESIGN. ‘A leather jacket is an A/W staple, and paired with the aviator silhouette, it's a winter-wardrobe essential.’
#4: ELEVATED SWEATS

Speaking of A/W staples, rugby shirts have made a major comeback this year. Equal parts preppy and casual, this collared silhouette is a great alternative to your usual sweatshirt – especially when it's wrapped in warm, earthy tones. ‘This rugby shirt is a great way to incorporate brown shades while hopping on the preppy trend,’ says Charis – it’ll see you from the sofa to your next social outing with minimal styling required.
#5: SMART FOOTWEAR

Another pair of shoes? We’re really spoiling you. Besides the aforementioned trainers, autumn calls for a sturdy pair of smart shoes – something you can throw on for first dates or dinner with mates without feeling overdressed. As Charis points out, ‘Boat shoes aren’t going anywhere this autumn, and these are the perfect shade to smarten up a casual look.’ Feeling particularly preppy? Pair these with ankle-length tailored trousers and the polo above. But they’ll look just as good with jeans and a basic T-shirt.
