EVERYONE'S WEARING CARDIGANS

Jacob Elordi’s signature soft-boy-meets-preppy vibe. Tyler, The Creator’s eclectic grandpa aesthetic. Adam Brody in Nobody Wants This. These men all have something in common (besides all being incredibly cool): they all owe their signature style to the cardigan. The staple knit has a frequent spot on the runways, from Louis Vuitton to Wales Bonner. Now, we're seeing them all over the streets – and we're here for it. If you're looking to add a cardigan to your roster, keep reading to see why they're everywhere right now, and get style inspo courtesy of some familiar faces.

WHY ARE CARDIGANS TRENDING?

Reason 1: they’re toasty. Assuming it’s not so cold that your breath is a billowing white puff, a layered-up cardigan is often snug enough to keep you warm, as well as looking cool – obviously. Reason 2? Naturally, runway trends trickle down to the public and street style catches on to them. That's what's happened here. Plus, there's no doubt that culturally relevant celebrities being spotted in them is helping their style trajectory, too.

HOW TO STYLE CARDIGANS FOR AW25

Cardigans are so versatile. Whether you like yours slim-fitting and preppy or baggy, free-form and sometimes purposely dog-eared, there's something for you. We're talking V-neckscrewnecks, zipped cardigans – a whole multiverse. While (like all knits) the créme de la créme will always be natural fibres like cashmere, alpaca and merino wool, wool-blend cardigans are lighter on your wallet, affording you a steady rotation for all your A/W outfits. Here's how we'll be styling them this season.

#1: PREPPY LIKE JACOB ELORDI

The better the actor, the simpler the style – and Jacob Elordi (like Cillian Murphy and Jeremy Allen-White) proves it. Despite his acting range, the Wuthering Heights star prefers to stay cosy while out and about. He’s even defined his signature off-duty style down to a science: cardigan + smart trousers + white tee + cool bag = a fuss-free formula. Follow his minimalist approach with a black cardigan, white trousers and a vibrant bag. The best thing about this outfit? How adaptable it is. It's perfect for the office, casual outings and impressing on a first date.

#2: WITH NEUTRALS LIKE ADAM BRODY

Adam Brody is a master of the cardigan, both on and off-screen. His portrayal of Noah in Nobody Wants This may see him with a wardrobe full of slouchy cardigans and relaxed T-shirts, but Adam knows how to sharpen them up when he’s not in character. He's a firm lover of neutrals – follow his lead by opting for a colour-drenched look. Layer a camel cardigan over a brown shirt, and for trousers, baggy jeans or smart trousers will look equally good. Add to the elevated feel with some low-pro trainers.

#3: ECLECTIC GRANDPA LIKE TYLER, THE CREATOR

If we’re going by the CEO of eclectic grandpa’s rulebook, a cardigan is a must-have. This look from Tyler, The Creator is a perfect example of how to layer for AW25. The addition of a Harrington jacket over the bright V-neck cardigan adds some dimension (and extra warmth), while the brown trousers complement the pastel tones and ground the look.

#4: WITH A WESTERN EDGE LIKE PHARRELL WILLIAMS

The cardigan dares not be boxed into a specific trend or aesthetic. In fact, it's now considered a staple in streetwear and workwear, partially thanks to Pharrell Williams. The American musician-turned-creative-director has made the cardigan rodeo-ready (in both his personal style and his collections for Louis Vuitton), teaming them with cowboy hats, western boots and dark-wash denim. Unless you've got a country music gig coming up, a cowboy hat may seem like overkill, but swapping it for a denim jacket won’t sacrifice any style points.
