TIRED OF JEANS? TRY TROUSERS INSTEAD
By Ayis Stephen-Diver, 12 January 2026
CHECKERED TROUSERS
Tartan and checks have seamlessly transitioned from countryside prep into the everyday wardrobe – including in the form of trousers. If you’re not afraid of some pattern clashing, checked trousers and a top are the most daring-but-delectable duo on the seasonal menu. Break up the matrix of vertical and horizontal lines with help from a solid-colour knit, and tomato-red ballet flats peeking underneath for some playfulness.

FLARED TROUSERS
We’re all familiar with flared jeans and yoga pants – but have you ever worn smart flares? It's a more elevated take on the well-loved hyper-femme shape. This chocolate brown pair can be dialled up or down, or taken from dawn to dark depending on how you style it. We’ve gone for the party-ready approach – a poncho, mesh mules and a burgundy woven clutch seriously turn up the luxe vibes.

BARREL-LEG TROUSERS
Barrel-leg jeans have a rigid structure that look good with minimalist pieces, while barrel-leg trousers have a fluid, but still recognisable shape. If your destination lacks a dress code, consider these your new go-tos. The front pleats and pinstripe pattern add an artisanal touch to these Bershka trousers, but you don’t need to go all corporate when outfit-building. Just pare them back for everyday affairs with a chunky knit and your favourite low-pros. And if you’re really feeling the denim drought, a denim accessory will quench your thirst aplenty.

WIDE-LEG TROUSERS
Wide-leg joggers are a loungewear staple – we bet you’re already the proud owner of a few. But if you’ve not separated them from their twin sweatshirts and hoodies yet, let this look convince you to break the rules. Wide-leg joggers are a high-low must-have – your business-casual looks just aren’t the same without them. adidas wide-leg trousers come with the signature three-stripe detail on the side, a feature that’ll elevate any 'fit. Style it for the city with a leather-look layer, crisp white shirt and trainers.

STRAIGHT-LEG TROUSERS
Pictures: ASOS
Just a little more compressed than the wide-leg silhouette is the straight-leg – its width mostly unchanging from hip to ankle. Whatever they’re styled with, these trousers add a clean-girl energy – exactly why they look so good with sporty pieces. adidas track jackets are still having a moment, and we’re layering a boxy wool coat over ours. The only suitable shoes are heeled boots, of course. These Topshop boots have that statement 90s aura we’re sure Carolyn Bessette and Cindy Crawford would approve of.
