LET THEM EAT COUTURE! HOW MARIE ANTOINETTE IS STILL SHAPING STYLE

There are few historical figures who still get our fashion muscles twitching. But one famous woman continues to shape sartorial preferences from beyond the grave: Marie Antoinette. Like it or not, the last French queen is to thank for many modern aesthetic preferences – be it pillowy powdered makeup or voluminous hair and skirts. And while her taste for opulence ultimately led to her downfall, she still cut a defiantly glamorous figure until her very last breath.

Say what you want about Marie Antoinette, but she certainly knew one thing: diamonds are a girl’s best friend. In true royal fashion, the French queen was no stranger to an opulent accessory – often captured wearing pearls, diamonds and gemstones en masse. When taking a leaf out of her book, remember more is more. And at a time when fashion can feel tiringly minimal, what’s more fun than dialling up your look? Layers of necklaces, sparkly details and cocktail rings are a sure-fire way to pepper some fun into your autumn wardrobe.

DRAMATIC SHAPES

18th-century France was known for its extravagant silhouettes – thanks largely to Marie Antoinette herself. Full-bodied skirts, cloud-like sleeves and crisp corsetry continue to influence modern designs, most notably in the cream-puff wedding gowns of the early 90s. And if recent fashion weeks are anything to go by, today’s runways are still taking notes. Opting for full skirts in structured fabrics like chiffon is an easy way to get your Marie Antoinette fix without looking out of character. And with corsets back on the trend agenda, now’s a great time to cinch that waist.

BOWS ON BOWS

Another staple of the Marie Antoinette archive is a bow. We’re talking bows on shoes, bows on blouses and – of course – bows in the hair. If you don’t fancy dressing like a Crufts-ready poodle, there are plenty of subtle ways to incorporate this romantic detail into your usual looks. Velvet and bows are a match made in heaven, and perfect for the season’s colder weather, so look for accessories that feature both. A feminine heel or delicate embroidery is prime real estate for introducing some 18th-century finery into your everyday wardrobe.

FRILLS AND FLORALS

Another feminine flourish favoured by Marie Antoinette was the floral (try saying that five times fast). They might not be the most obvious choice as autumn rolls around, but winter layering is taking new forms this season – so don’t be afraid to pair lightweight fabrics like tulle with floral embroidery. These looks are perfect for cold-weather occasions, be it a wedding or a birthday. And if you fancy dialling them down for the daily commute? Just throw on a knit or tailored coat for a sophisticated texture clash.
