HOW TO STYLE BOOTS FOR AUTUMN

Mornings are colder than usual, that one tree outside your window is shedding its leaves – we don’t need another autumn intro. What we do need to introduce, however, is the season’s biggest trend: boots. Boots always strut their way back onto runways and moodboards once this season rolls around – they’re undefeated in the comfort category, after all. But before you defrost your UGGs, let the Editorial Team put some new boot styles on your radar. From riding boots to moto boots, we've compiled the five trending styles you need to know, including how to style boots for autumn.

WHY ARE BOOTS TRENDING?

It’s impossible to ignore all the ankle boots anchoring Burberry SS26’s fringe coats and structured tailoring. Through cow print and sleek leather, AllSaints transformed the cowboy boot from a summer staple to a cold-weather statement. Not to mention the comeback of 90s minimalism among fashion’s biggest names – like Kylie Jenner – whose boot collection has a very Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Cindy Crawford-flavoured twang to it. So to answer this question, boots are trending because they’re versatile. Whatever aesthetic is on your agenda, there's a pair of boots guaranteed to complete the look and leave nothing to be desired. Read on for five boot outfits you need this season.

#1: HOW TO STYLE RIDING BOOTS

Writer and self-proclaimed horse-girl Flo is a lover of all things equestrian, preppy and rooted in British style – so riding boots are absolutely her cup of tea. ‘I love how timeless a riding boot is. They’ll take you from city to country with minimal faff, and conjure serious “crisp autumn walk” chic. Bonus points for their shiny leather finish – perfect for riding out a downpour. Even if you’re not a horse lover, a good pair of riding boots will transform your humdrum commute into a galloping adventure.’ Take notes from Flo and stick to the tried-and-tested riding boots formula: a checked blazer, skinny jeans (to tuck into your boots) and a turtleneck knit.

#2: HOW TO STYLE SLOUCHY BOOTS

‘I for one can’t stop thinking about those slouchy boots we saw walking down the AW25 Zimmerman runway. Don’t remember them? They made a statement but had just the right amount of slouch to radiate a boho aesthetic,’ says Junior Editor, Liz. Slouchy boots have re-entered the trend cycle under the larger boho umbrella, but Zimmerman isn’t the only co-signer. Ralph Lauren, Balmain and Louis Vuitton have shown high-fashion takes too. So how do you elevate your slouchy boots? Liz has the answer: ‘These Stradivarius boots offer that same [boho] energy, but in a brown suede – which is the shade to be seen in this season. I’ll be styling mine with silky shorts, a lightweight knit, a leather bomber and tinted sunglasses.’

#3: HOW TO STYLE CHELSEA BOOTS

Chelsea boots are a timeless style, so you see them on runways every season – but they’re rooted in 60s heritage. And I expect with cultural moments like The Beatles’ biopics in production they’ll be back on everyone’s style radar in a big way soon,’ says Junior Editor, Emma. While sticking to 60s style codes is always a good idea when it comes to Chelsea boots, Emma styles hers with a modern touch. ‘I love a cowboy boot in summer, and the Chelsea boot is my winter equivalent. I like them with an angular toe so they poke out beneath baggy jeans or flares. This season I’ll be pairing mine with a shaggy coat – I’m loving all the faux-fur styles that are everywhere right now.’ From full faux-fur styles to Afghan-style coats, elevate your Chelsea boots with statement layers for AW25.

#4: HOW TO STYLE 90S BOOTS

If you had to ask us, the perfect 90s boot is structured from every plane and angle, with a harshly geometric tongue and an architectural, mid-height heel. Like the rest of us, Editorial Manager Jazmin is a huge fan of the style icons who made these boots a hot commodity: ‘There’s no better way to wear 90s boots than with professional, work-ready pieces. Whether I’m headed to the office or having drinks with my friends, I take style cues from Halle Berry and Jennifer Aniston’s off-duty outfits from the 90s; I love how they teamed their boots with basics and corpcore.’ Take that as your sign to add tailoring, mini skirts, trench coats and waist-cinching shirts to your A/W rotation.

#5: HOW TO STYLE MOTO BOOTS

If you didn’t already know, ‘moto’ is just short for ‘motorcycle’ – implying a boot inspired by the rugged, sandy aesthetic often associated with the biker lifestyle. Junior Writer Ayis says, ‘Moto boots are the ultimate tool for subverting traditionally hyper-femme pieces with grungier, more gothic feels.’ Exactly why she, alongside tons of festival attendees, swore by moto boots alongside graphic tees, lace maxi skirts and milkmaid dresses this festival season. But outside of their style credentials, they’re also super heavy-duty and make a great investment for anyone unwilling to replace their boots every 3-5 business days.
