BACK-TO-SCHOOL STYLE IS OUR NEW GO-TO

We’ve reached that time of year when change is in the air, quite literally. The breeze is cooler, the days are shorter – and as the kids start heading back to school, the runways take note. Fashion is full of preppy references from loafers to classroom-friendly tailoring, and it’s giving us some serious childhood nostalgia. While we might not be traipsing through a shopping centre in search of our new stationery set-up, these late summer months are the perfect opportunity to reboot your wardrobe ahead of autumn. Keep scrolling for the back-to-school style we’ve already got on our radar.

GREY MINI SKIRTS

Just the sight of a grey mini skirt takes us right back to school uniform shopping. Nowadays, these tailored staples can be dressed up with a lot more fun and flair (such is the joy of adulting). Miu Miu was arguably responsible for the mainstream renaissance of this classroom staple, but given their versatility, it’s easy to see why the trend stuck. From pleated styles to pinstripes and micro-skirts, you’ll find no shortage of style inspiration. And thanks to the darker cool tones on offer, this is the perfect transitional piece for autumn.

LOAFERS

Granted, these are a year-round wardrobe winner. But loafers are particularly poignant as we shift seasonal gears. While many of us have been reaching for ballet flats and flip flops during warmer weeks, there’s nothing appealing about a cold toe. And finding autumnal options that aren’t trainers can be a bit of a sticking point. Loafers are the perfect workaround in that they’re comfy, timeless and as understated as our favourite summer flats. Whether you’re pairing with jeans or socks and a skirt, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a look these don’t work with.

MARY-JANES

Another easy way to update your footwear for fall? The addition of a simple strap. With this singular detail, the humble ballet flat is transformed into a childhood favourite: the Mary-Jane. Slightly more durable and oodles more nostalgic, we’re convinced these old-school flats will be everywhere come autumn.

CARDIGANS

There are a few certainties in life – the arrival of the seasons, the setting of the sun and the annual return of the cardigan. This humble piece of knitwear is a firm favourite when navigating in-between weather, and every year we’re blessed with new silhouettes to sink our sartorial teeth into. This season, it’s all about a short-sleeved take, along with cinched waists for a more elevated look. If you’re seeking a subtle way to shift a look without completely overhauling your summer style, these are a great alt for the usual tank or tee. Plus, when paired with a grey mini, they’ll get you serious back-to-school brownie points.

SOCKS AND BOOTS

Socks – of the knee-high variety in particular – are a shortcut to our school era. Not only do they pair well with the loafers and Mary-Janes mentioned above, but the suggestion of a long sock peeking out from a pair of boots is sure to dominate late-2025 style. In honour of our favourite uniform, we’re loving a grey over-the-knee pair combined with a classic brown biker boot. It’s the perfect clash of girlie and grit to revive your new-season lineup.
