STYLE AND CULTURE

SPOTLIGHT ON: LOAFERS – HOW TO STYLE THE TRENDING SHOE

The loafer is a quiet style icon. They’re always there – on the red carpets, in your office, at weddings – they’ve essentially been around since shoes were invented (that’s a long time), but when did they become so *cool*? We can pinpoint it to when Jacob Elordi and Jonathan Bailey were spotted wearing them with their everyday looks. Plus, there’s no denying the return of preppier, campus-style ‘fits has also had something to do with it. Either way, we’re here for it – scroll to find out why they’re trending right now, and how you can work them into your shoe rotation.

WHY THEY'RE TRENDING:

Technically, loafers are always trending – they’ll always have a place in formalwear, but we’re loving them styled up in everyday ‘fits this season. Celebs like Jacob Elordi and Tyler, The Creator are regularly seen rocking them – Jacob tends to opt for a high-low aesthetic featuring oversized knits and tailored trousers, while Tyler goes all-out grandad-core with patterned knitwear and streetwear influences.

HOW WE'RE STYLING LOAFERS THIS SEASON:

Workwear is *huge* right now, and this is how you can make loafers work with it. The main thing: keep the colour palette complementary. We’re already clashing aesthetics, so opting for tonal shades will keep the flow of the ‘fit. The structured trouser mimics the style of tailoring too, so it sits well above the loafer.

If you want to add a print to your look, cowhide is a great option. These loafers give a subtle nod to the trend without going too statement, and with tailored trousers and a leather jacket, we’re keeping the rest of the look classic. Add a scarf for extra texture and warmth, while tying in the shade of the shoe.

The recipe for a grandad-core look: a patterned jumper, dad denim, socks, and, of course, loafers. It’s that easy. If you want to go further, take notes from Tyler, The Creator and Jacob Elordi with statement bags, cardigans, corduroy trousers and caps. Keep it bright and clash those prints for maximum eclectic-grandpa energy.

A varsity edge will bring a tailored feel to your look without it becoming formal. Start with tailored trousers (a heritage check adds to the preppy aesthetic) and pair them with a varsity jacket or sweatshirt, then finish with a loafer. This pair from Dr. Martens have tassels and a classic horsebit accentuating the heritage look.
