FROM FAUX FUR TO FUNNEL NECKS, HERE ARE THE KNITWEAR DETAILS TO KNOW THIS AUTUMN

Everyone has a favourite season. Me? I’m an autumn gal. Maybe it’s the back-to-school vibe (any excuse to buy aesthetic stationery). Or perhaps it’s the irresistible urge to wrap up in something cosy once the weather turns. Along with falling leaves and pumpkin spice, knitwear is one of autumn's biggest draws. So, if you’re looking to add to your stash, here are the key trends to look out for.

FAUX FUR-TRIMMED KNITS

Y2K fashion is a style goldmine, and the latest throwback trend to re-emerge from this iconic era? Faux fur-trimmed cardigans. Trust me, I was there: navigating the early 00s in a baby-blue Emma Bunton-esque knit. A little extra fuzz on the collar and cuffs is all you need to take a cardi from dependable staple to diva's dream. While the weather's still mild, team yours with capri pants and mules. They’ll also compliment a host of party looks come winter.

FUZZY FINISHES

Autumn is the midpoint between summer festivals and winter party season, so it’s a natural pitstop for getting cosy. This means soft everything – lighting, furnishings and, crucially, knits. Think plenty of plush jumpers and styles with a brushed, fuzzy finish. They’re the kind of thing you can picture yourself wearing in front of a roaring fire with a piping-hot chocolate in hand. Colour-wise, the options are endless, but I love how brushed fibres give stripey styles an abstract look.

ARGYLE KNITS

I'm really excited about the current crop of argyle knits coming up, and judging by how often they’re added to Saved Items, you are too. Argyle is perhaps the most refined pattern in the check family, so a knit is going to add instant preppy polish to just about any ‘fit. It’s surprisingly versatile too – you can go classic with muted colours, dial it up with bright shades, or get creative with Topshop’s blown-up, deconstructed take.

ANIMAL PRINT KNITS

I'd argue animal print is basically a neutral, and these knits provide solid evidence. Whether leopard, zebra or deer, they’re just as easy to style as a trusty grey staple – with jeans, under a trench, or with a mini skirt and boots. You also have your pick of shapes and finishes with this Noah’s Ark of knits. I personally love slim-fitting, semi-sheer styles under tailoring, or the Law Roach-approved oversized leopard jumper and scarf combo.

FUNNEL NECKS

It's 100% Team Funnel Neck at ASOS HQ. They just elevate certain silhouettes. Jackets are the first thing that come to mind, but knitwear runs a close second (and is coming ever-closer to grabbing the top spot). As ASOS writer Flo says, ‘If you’re hunting for an autumn staple that still feels exciting, a funnel-neck jumper is your best bet. Deliciously warm, indulgently on-trend and still understated enough to wear year after year.’ Funnel necks also up the cosy ante, so you’ll be extra-glad of one when the cold weather rolls in.
