HOW TO ADD A FUNNEL NECK TO YOUR WARDROBE THIS AUTUMN

Every so often, a trend gets its claws in and hangs on to our wardrobe for months or even years (here’s looking at you, trench coat). A few unexpected reruns notwithstanding, the latest lasting trend has been the funnel neck. Far more appealing than it sounds, this striking silhouette wasn’t a frontrunner in the fashion popularity rankings. But here we are, 12 months on from when it first exploded and still no closer to parting with it.

Leather funnel neck jackets will be everywhere this autumn.

Like most great sartorial currents, the funnel neck is a blend of bold and wearable. Don’t be put off by its exaggerated neckline. It might look intimidating at first glance, but consider a funnel neck the edgier older sister of a timeless polo neck. And since it looks to be sticking around, we’ve gathered four styles worth having on your radar, along with styling tips. Keep scrolling.

The most ubiquitous of the funnel neck pieces is the jacket, specifically shell and windbreaker styles. A heightened neckline adds some punch to a would-be casual staple and makes for a great companion to tailored trousers if you enjoy high-low dressing. As the weather turns, we’re also eyeing funnel-neck jackets in heavier-weight leather and suede. The secret to pulling off the top-heavy silhouette is a cinched waist, especially effective with skin-hugging bottoms like capris and a kitten heel.

If you haven’t been lucky enough to encounter a funnel-neck shirt, let us introduce you to it. This is an ideal option for funnel neck newbies, as the cut is inherently lighter than a jacket and thus makes less of a statement. You can heed the same advice as above and opt for cinched waists to streamline your look (paired nicely with oversized jeans) or reach for quarter-zip shirts to bring a touch of sporty tech to your daily rotation.

It was inevitable that the trend of the moment would collab with the trend of all time – and what a couple they make. A funnel neck trench is the easiest way to update your autumn coat with a refreshing spin, signalling to the world that you’re effortlessly stylish and fluent in British heritage. It’s an extra perk that the elevated neckline adds to a trench coat’s protective design, blocking out wind, rain and any unwanted energy.

Another seasonal must-have from the funnel-neck family is a good knit. We’re all starting to rotate the wardrobe for cosier months, and if you’re rooting through the jumper drawer, there’s no better excuse to add a few newbies to the pack. If you’re hunting for an autumn staple that still feels exciting, a funnel-neck jumper is your best bet. Deliciously warm, indulgently on-trend and still understated enough to wear year after year.
