THIS AUTUMN, STRUCTURED JACKETS ARE ON GOOD FORM

As a self-confessed autumn/winter hater, I can’t deny there’s something about September. Spark me up a pumpkin-spiced candle and get Gilmore Girls queued, because when my feet hit that first crunchy leaf, I’m a woman possessed. The possibilities of a new season are always exciting, but autumn is particularly fruitful for fashion – specifically jackets. You can never have too many.

Structured jackets dominated Copenhagen Fashion Week.

Whether you’re looking to spice up a basic, need a night-out layer or just fancy updating your daily staple, it’s worth noting that structure is trending. And I don’t mean Olympic-scale wellness routines. Architectural silhouettes and bold shoulders are defining September outerwear, and you can get started with this list of just-dropped styles.

THE TRENCH COAT

Hardly reinventing the wheel here, but there’s a reason the trench comes out to play every autumn. It’s unbeaten where versatility and sophistication are concerned. And with such an effortlessly cool yet iconic silhouette, the trench coat is a primed canvas for seasonal experimentation – this year’s structured shapes included. I’ve had this ASOS DESIGN piece in my Saved Items since it dropped, thanks to the sharp shoulders and clean lines.

THE FUNNEL-NECK JACKET

Funnel necks swooped in on the track-jacket trend and stuck around for extras, so best believe they’ll be dominating autumn. The exaggerated neckline provides a built-in shield against cold weather, while bringing an air of mystery to your usual outfits. This ARRANGE jacket features a belted waist for extra cinching (the perfect balance for that bolstered neckline) and don’t get me started on the chocolate brown. September called and it wants its uniform back.

THE BOMBER JACKET

When you’re not quite ready for a full-blown coat but too cold for a T-shirt, a bomber jacket stands to attention. A good bomber is structured anyway, but this season calls for a little extra – a heavyweight fabric and oversized collar, perhaps? Finished in a fitting navy shade, this Mango jacket deserves a place on your roster.

THE UNEXPECTED BLAZER

Toggle fastenings (also known as frog fastenings) are enjoying a moment. And the easiest way to factor them into your jacket lineup is through a blazer. The sleek structured fit of tailored styles is a great balance for the intricate detailing, and brings a modern spin to your work-wear pieces. I love this Topshop piece paired with capri pants and a kitten heel. It's a great all-rounder, whether I’m hitting the board room or heading on a date.

THE SUEDE JACKET

When it comes to texture, suede rules September. As for colour? Anything earthy. Put the two together and you’ve got this Stradivarius jacket – an khaki-green ode to cosy season. The exaggerated bomber silhouette, oversized pockets and cinched waist make for an undoubtedly cool layer, and one that’ll keep you warm too. Classic straight-leg denim and loafers are a great match for this piece, but if you fancy continuing the structured theme, a barrel-leg trouser will balance the 'fit.
