THIS AUTUMN, STRUCTURED JACKETS ARE ON GOOD FORM

As a self-confessed autumn/winter hater, I can’t deny there’s something about September. Spark me up a pumpkin-spiced candle and get Gilmore Girls queued, because when my feet hit that first crunchy leaf, I’m a woman possessed. The possibilities of a new season are always exciting, but autumn is particularly fruitful for fashion – specifically jackets. You can never have too many.

Hardly reinventing the wheel here, but there’s a reason the trench comes out to play every autumn. It’s unbeaten where versatility and sophistication are concerned. And with such an effortlessly cool yet iconic silhouette, the trench coat is a primed canvas for seasonal experimentation – this year’s structured shapes included. Toggle fastenings (also known as frog fastenings) are enjoying a moment. And the easiest way to factor them into your jacket lineup is through a blazer. I love this Topshop piece paired with capri pants and a kitten heel. It's a great all-rounder, whether I’m hitting the board room or heading on a date.

When it comes to texture, suede rules September. As for colour? Anything earthy. Put the two together and you’ve got this Stradivarius jacket – an khaki-green ode to cosy season. The exaggerated bomber silhouette, oversized pockets and cinched waist make for an undoubtedly cool layer, and one that’ll keep you warm too. Classic straight-leg denim and loafers are a great match for this piece, but if you fancy continuing the structured theme, a barrel-leg trouser will balance the 'fit.
