WHY WE’RE STILL STEALING KATE MOSS’S STYLE

We should start by addressing the title of this article, for it’s a little misleading. It’s not that Kate Moss isn’t firmly pinned on our style mood boards (she is), but her aesthetic is one that defies imitation. Ever since she exploded onto the 90s modelling scene, Kate has existed outside of the norm. Her endless reinvention feels natural, never forced, and her looks have always set the trends rather than followed them.

This level of It-girl confidence exists once in a generation. We’re just lucky enough to have witnessed it. And as Kate (now 52) becomes the subject of a new biographical film Moss & Freud, our fascination with her style shows no signs of waning. It might resist replication, but there are plenty of lessons to be drawn from the supermodel’s wardrobe. We’ve picked out our favourites below.

THE ESSENTIAL WARDROBE

Kate’s early work with minimalist icon Calvin Klein first catapulted her to fashion-icon status, so it’s no surprise her wardrobe is famed for its understated formula. Back in the 90s, Kate was a purveyor of the simple lines and monochrome palette favoured by other legends like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. The perfect jean, a well-cut tank and versatile leather boots were all you needed to make a statement – and it’s a formula that persists to this day. If it ain’t broke…

You can’t fault Kate for her flexibility, as demonstrated by her grungy ensembles. A direct contrast to her clean minimalist roster, the early noughties were punctuated by studded belts, booty shorts and parka jackets – echoing the rise of Britpop and UK festival culture. As always, Kate was at the forefront, reminding us that women really can have it all. Whether she was waltzing around in a cocktail dress on Saturdays or traipsing through the mud in wellies on a Sunday, Miss Moss has always been a master of adapting to the moment.

Apt as we veer into summer, Kate’s evening looks are an endless source of date-night inspiration. Often rooted in her signature British edge, the supermodel’s glamorous gowns and dresses feature black lace, gothic embellishments and sheer and sultry textures. This black lace dress, finished with a fringed cape, is deliciously wild. Elevated and luxurious yet unexpected and just a touch of camp, it’s a reminder that Kate’s style lives outside the lines – and fashion rules are there to be broken.

Heavy jackets might be parked for the foreseeable, but Kate’s no stranger to a statement outfit topper – and we’d do well to heed her advice. Miss Moss has been known to throw some extra va va voom on a look with the addition of a faux-fur coat, often tossed effortlessly over the shoulder. It’s a one-way ticket to elevating your eveningwear, especially when paired with more understated pieces like a little black dress or dark jeans.
