Once in a generation, a shoe comes along that surprises us all. Who knew that shoe would be ushered in by Birkenstock, makers of the comfiest clogs in the Northern Hemisphere? It is the quiet ones that get you, after all.

Presenting the Naples clogs, which lie somewhere between loafers and slippers. Made from soft suede, this particular pair has a businesslike upper with moccasin-style stitching and a preppy penny slot. It’s set on the brand’s signature engineered cork sole, making it cloud-like to walk on. So how do you style a shoe that sits smack dab in the middle of the smart-to-casual continuum? We have some ideas.

#2: THE SUMMER SUIT 'FIT

Sometimes you just need an all-rounder – the kind of ‘fit that can take you from the office to post-work drinks, or from life admin to a dinner date. Go for classic separates with a subtle twist. Instead of a white T-shirt, wear something with a Henley neckline or raglan sleeves. Instead of slouchy wide-leg trousers with your Birks, pick a style that’s a little more tailored.
