STYLE LESSONS FROM SKEPTA

Some may know Skepta as the King of Grime or Big Smoke, but we know him around here as the King of 'Fits. Let's look at the material: he has his own fashion line, MAINS. He's collaborated with brands like Puma and Kickers, he's an incredibly talented painter... oh, and he's one of the UK's most influential musicians. It's no wonder he's always on our radar. In honour of his newest album, The Fork and Knife (out today, FYI), we've decided to take a broader look at his spotless styling choices. Here's what Skepta's style has taught us.
#1: CHOOSE NEXT-LEVEL KNITS

It goes without saying that Skepta is confident in many things – this is the man who named his debut album Greatest Hits, after all. That approach applies to his clothing, too. First up: the right knit. For him, boring styles don't cut it, which is especially important when jumpers are such a foundational part of a man's wardrobe. The key to nailing knitwear, Skepta-style, is in going for those extra elevated touches – ruching, appliques or an interesting cut. And don't be afraid to make your knits more evening-appropriate with a crisp white shirt and tie tucked neatly underneath.
#2: A COAT COMPLETES THE LOOK

If there's one thing a man can learn about dressing from Skepta, it's that the coat can complete the outfit. Case in point: this look at Burberry's AW24 show during London Fashion Week. While the classic tailored-trousers-and-tee combo isn't always worth a double-take, that standout coat most definitely is – from the forest-green shade to the mix of plush textures. Can we also get an honourable mention for those studded loafers?
#3: KNOW YOUR STREETWEAR

The streetwear hobbyist will be able to identify the acid-green jacket worn by Skepta at this year's Reading Festival as a Stone Island number. The real fans know it's not just any Stone Island number. Issued in 2001, this grailed archive piece is made from a super-sheer, almost transparent, laminated nylon and is near-impossible to find on the resale market. If you want to take a leaf out of Skepta's book, dive deeper into more streetwear brands like Napapijri, Columbia and Carhartt WIP – the mix of fashion, function and insider details makes it irresistible.
#4: MAKE SURE YOUR SUITS STAND OUT

Dressing up like the man himself means statement tailoring. You can ace suiting à la Skepta two ways – double-breasted with classic pinstripes (and don't forget the unexpected headwear), or something printed from head-to-toe, like the custom tattoo-themed Thom Browne style he wore to this year's Met Gala. Whichever direction you go in, it's almost guaranteed to be a sartorial shutdown.
#5: ALWAYS HAVE A STATEMENT JACKET TO HAND

Our top contender for the 21st century's biggest trophy jacket fiend? You guessed it. Skepta has amassed a dizzying amount of attention-grabbing harringtons and bombers, from this year's metallic Casablanca style to the aforementioned rare Stone Island to a painted, Ribena-themed moto jacket from his own MAINS line. It's impossible to select just one from the line-up, but we've decided to showcase possibly the most luxe – this Louis Vuitton jacket, as seen at the label's SS27 show in Paris this year. A styling tip: don't be afraid of tonal pairings. Once you stick to classic shapes, everything else will fall into place.
