As one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world, New York is a place full of endless possibilities. From the buzzing shopping area of Soho to the chilled, bar-heavy region of downtown Brooklyn, if you’re lucky enough to be taking a long-haul flight there anytime soon, here’s a roundup of what to wear, where to stay and how to keep yourself occupied.

As you'd expect from a recognised fashion capital, the residents of New York are sartorially savvy. To fit in, don a taxi-coloured yellow shirt and a graphic-print T-shirt to kick off your outfit. The weather can get pretty hot around this time of year, so go for a slick pair of checked shorts on your bottom half. Accessories-wise, opt for a Nike cross-body bag, retro-inspired shades and a steezy pair of adidas Originals Samba Sock primeknit trainers to have you prepped for walking several blocks.

If you’re feeling flush, a hotel or Airbnb in Manhattan – Upper East Side or Upper West Side – is the way to go. Wherever you stay, you’ll be a stone’s throw away from Central Park – the ideal place to go for a morning stroll with a cup of joe from The Jolly Goat Coffee Bar. Manhattan is home to Times Square, the Rockefeller Centre and the Empire State Building, so if you feel like channelling Kevin in Home Alone 2, make the location your adopted neighbourhood. Alternatively, if you’re after a sitcom-style apartment (fire-escape stairs, communal front door, the works), then head to the cosmopolitan area of Soho to find your digs, where there are shops and niche cafes aplenty.

Now, when you’re in New York it’s customary to hit up all the obvious tourist hot spots. From going up the Empire State Building to visiting the Statue of Liberty, there are numerous iconic sites to visit while you’re in the city. However, if you’re after a less conventional experience, head to the illustrious Apollo Theatre in Harlem to visit the neo-classical building where the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Lauryn Hill have performed.
But if historic locations aren’t your bag and you’re down to do some shopping instead, skip the pricey department stores on Madison Avenue and head to Soho. There you’ll find cool streetwear destinations like Kith, Opening Ceremony and Round Two, where you can pick up a deadstock bargain if you’re willing to queue. There’s also a massive Nike store on Broadway if you’re after a fresh pair of kicks that you probably won’t be able to find in the UK.
As for what to do in the evening, there’s a reason why New York is referred to as the city that never sleeps. Head to downtown Brooklyn for a bevvie or two – Kimoto Rooftop Restaurant & Garden Lounge offers up incredible views and drinks for a decent price. For a post-sesh snack, head to The Commodore in Williamsburg (it’s open till 4am all week) for a plate of out-of-this-world nachos. Enjoy taking a bite out of the Big Apple!
