FIVE THE WEEKND OUTFITS
By Kasia Hastings, 16 February 2017
Since he made his debut back in 2011 with House Of Balloons, Canadian R&B casanova The Weeknd has provided us with seven of the most sexually provocative albums and mixtapes of all time, set up his own record label, XO, and built a signature style strong enough to stand up alongside the music industry’s most talked-about hair. Not since Busta Rhymes’ dreadlocks has so much been made of a man’s up-do, but even more impressive is the finely tuned uniform that Abel Tesfaye has been confidently developing in the background. Here are five of his best sartorial hits.
You can take the guy out of Toronto, but you can’t take Toronto out of the guy. Here we have The Weeknd with a contemporary take on the classic Canadian tuxedo. Boxy jackets have become an important part of the singer’s low-key aesthetic and here he teams his go-to light-wash denim cover-up with a black tee, a pair of black skinny jeans and some all-black Timberland boots to give this 50s staple a nice streetwear update.
New York Fashion Weeknd
He may have released one of this year’s biggest merch lines, but The Weeknd’s fashion prowess predates his tour memorabilia. Here he is smartening up his act to take his place on the front row at New York Fashion Week. The singer’s textured grey jacket is a cool understated addition to his usual all-black base that ticks the trend boxes without foraying into fashion-victim territory.
Next up, we have how to do travel style the Weeknd way. Jetting off on a trip, the singer stays true to his monochrome palette with a steezy Palace tracksuit and a pair of primeknit Adidas Y-3 Pure Boost ZG kicks. Minimal fuss and some strong stripe detailing keep the Starboy comfy without compromising on style.
The Weeknd pretty much went into hiding when he was working on his fourth album, Starboy, but when he did reappear from the creative abyss, it was, as usual, in a really good coach jacket. No one wears this 90s streetwear favourite better, and here the Canadian shows exactly how to refresh it for 2017. He strikes the perfect smart/casual balance by keeping his colour palette pared back, his lines clean and his detailing simple.
Black Friday Weeknd
Boxy jacket, black oversized tee, skinny jeans and lace-up boots – this all becoming a bit familiar, but if it ain’t broke… You have to hand it to him, the guy’s got his look down and it was business as usual for a performance at the 2016 American Music Awards – this time with added studs. The Weeknd’s stage style is a thing of beauty and this prize jacket from Valentino’s AW16 collection is a fitting designer addition to his staple streetwear aesthetic.
