NOT READY FOR A FAUX-FUR COAT? TRY THESE ACCESSORIES INSTEAD

Maybe it’s because I never truly got over the mob-wife Carmela Soprano aesthetic, or it’s my preference for anything fluffy and floofy, but the faux-fur coat will always be one of my favourite autumn/winter layers. That being said, it’s not exactly the easiest piece to just walk out the door with – it demands a certain energy, both from the outfit and the occasion.

With faux-fur accessories, however, you still get that lush texture and styling impact, but without having to haul around a coat that takes up one and a half seats on the train. Faux-fur scarves instantly make an outfit feel more intentional, and faux-fur hats are another favourite, arriving in everything from bucket to pillbox silhouettes. The trend kept cropping up during Fashion Month, too, proving its star power. So, if you’re not quite ready to commit to the coat, here’s how to style faux-fur accessories instead.

#1: SOFTEN TAILORING WITH FAUX-FUR SCARVES

One of the easiest ways to elevate a look is through texture contrast. Think sharp tailoring with a plush faux-fur scarf layered on top. This styling trick makes an outfit feel intentional without looking like you’ve spent hours planning it. I especially love this black-and-neutral scarf. It’s a refreshing switch-up from the chocolate brown and black furs dominating the trend cycle right now, and the lighter tone beautifully tempers the darker palette of the outfit.

#2: STYLE FAUX-FUR HATS WITH CLASHING TEXTURES

If I had to name my ultimate celebrity style icon, it’d be Rihanna. And if you’re as deep into her street style archives as I am, this outfit might ring a bell. While her faux-fur hat was considerably more oversized, the formula is all the same: a leather-look jacket, graphic tee and relaxed denim. Much like the scarf did with tailoring, the faux-fur hat softens the toughness of the leather jacket. Then there’s the deer print, which adds another trend into the mix. The contrast between this playful, feminine print and the dark, oversized styling is exactly what makes this outfit work.

#3: GET GRUNGE WITH FAUX-FUR BOOTS

They might be controversial, but I’m firmly on the side of furry footwear. Only a few years ago were faux-fur boots relegated to the corner shop run, but styled correctly, they can feel surprisingly elevated. My favourite way to do that is through 2010s grunge. A leather biker jacket, skinny black jeans and a slouchy bag combo is exactly the type of outfit I love right now. The furry boots break up all that leather and denim, and their volume creates contrast between both halves of the body.

#4: TEAM FAUX-FUR BAGS WITH MORE FAUX FUR

Faux-fur bags are relative newcomers compared to scarves and hats, but no less impactful. They’re playful, tactile and give casual outfits a touch of difference. Here, I’ve paired this Topshop shoulder bag with casual pieces you probably already own. Namely, a sheer henley top, longline jersey shorts and sneakerinas. The sporty foundation keeps things relaxed, while the fur-trimmed cardigan adds another layer of texture. I really like how the chocolate fur trim mirrors the bag, creating a subtle cohesion without feeling overly matchy-matchy. While conventional wisdom might tell you to stop at one faux-fur piece, I say break the rules.
