CARGO COMEBACK: THESE ARE THE TROUSERS WE'RE WEARING ON REPEAT

Listen, we love jeans – full-on, heart-eyes L-O-V-E. But sometimes you just aren’t in mood for denim, and that’s ok. That’s where cargo trousers come in. There’s an excellent chance you’ve spotted a new favourite pair on socials, only to find they're already sold out (I can commiserate). Everyone seems to be waking up to this casual classic, and for good reason.

There’s something about cargo trousers that’s perfect for autumn 2026. Maybe it’s how well they work with the season’s utilitarian mood. Maybe it’s their status as a Y2K icon. Or maybe it’s just how versatile the right pair can be – what other style looks just as good with flip-flops as they do with lo-pro trainers and point-toe kitten heels? Did you miss out on snagging that viral pair of cargo trousers? Worry not, we've picked out some of our favourites, which, dare we say it, might be even better.

THE CLASSIC CARGOS

The OG cargo style has military origins, so classic pairs usually come in sandy beige or army green and are fitted with multiple pockets – if they don’t have two flap pockets mid-thigh, they might not be cargos. ASOS DESIGN’s pair is as close to the original as it gets. They’re baggy but not too baggy, so they’re incredibly easy to style – either balance the shape with close-fitting layers or go oversized with a relaxed shirt.

THE SUPER-BAGGY CARGOS

If you’ve ever watched an All Saints music video from the 00s you’ll understand the style potential of hyper-baggy cargo trousers, and if you haven’t, feel free to pause for a Pure Shores viewing break. As turn-of-the-millennium fashions goes, oversized cargos still have plenty of mileage. COLLUSION’s come in black, so the shape rightly takes centre stage. The bottom half of your 'fit will have plenty of volume, so keep the rest streamlined with a crop top or baby tee.

THE CAMO CARGOS

Our other favourite denim alternative this season is camouflage print, so why not hit two trend targets in one with Bershka's camo cargos? As our writer Flo said, ‘Thanks to their utility codes, camo trousers feel casual yet structured, so they’re great for dialling down a crisp shirt or bringing edge to a simple tee.’ Camo also goes well with bold autumn colours like plum and burgundy as well as zingier shades like turquoise.

THE CROPPED CARGOS

Petite girls, this one’s for you. Cropped cargo are a little more streamlined and refined, so they look especially good with shirts and tailored jackets. Topshop’s beige version sits somewhere between cargos and chinos, with a pleated waist and one deep pocket for interest. Wear yours with slingbacks now and switch to heeled leather knee boots come winter.

THE ELEVATED CARGOS

Can you improve on a classic? ARRANGE makes a pretty compelling case. Its cargo trousers are a grown-up take, thanks to all the considered details. Time for a closer look: the elasticated waist and drawcord pockets create soft, draped folds, which temper the volume of the fabric. The washed khaki shade is a rich but subtle colour upgrade too.
