WHAT IS WHIMSIGOTH? HOW TO NAIL CHARLI XCX’S NEW LOOK

Brat is dead! Charli xcx’s iconic era is officially over, and the final nail in the coffin? Her new album Music, Fashion, Film, which launched this week after months of suspense. Like the lime green electropop record before it, ‘MFF’ (as we’re affectionately dubbing it) has ushered in a new aesthetic for music’s favourite alt It-girl. Charli was never one to be boxed in, but if we had to define her new look, we’d pin it somewhere between Y2K grunge and Berghain goth. The technical term for this hybrid style is ‘whimsigoth’, a trend fusing gothic lace and dark florals with vintage-inspired satin and feminine silhouettes. Keep scrolling for a deep dive into Charli xcx's latest era and the whimsigoth looks worth adding to your wardrobe.

BUTTERY LACE PEPPERED WITH BLACK

Charli's brat-era accessories meet a new match in the form of whimsical dresses.

The first rule of whimsigoth – as expertly demonstrated by Charli herself – is that the traditional concept of ‘goth’ need not apply. Don’t feel limited to black, focusing instead on dark accessories to ground your lace dresses with a grungy edge. Charli’s butter yellow look features floaty feminine sleeves and delicate floral details that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Victorian boudoir. It’s that old-timey feel that makes these whimsical pieces slightly haunting, particularly when paired with a clashing leather bag and sporty sunglasses.

LOTS OF SATIN AND SLIPS

In the same vein, Charli’s new whimsigoth wardrobe leans on anything resembling nightwear. If it looks like your grandma’s chemise, it’ll work. For nights out, a pointed black heel is the perfect companion, but chunky leather boots work well for casual daytime plans. Charli’s also waving the whimsigoth flag with her infamous wavy tendrils and plenty of underwear as outerwear – so try layering these soft designs with detailed bralettes and colourful pastel corsetry.
