THE SPRING TRAINERS WE CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT

There’s just something about the turning of the seasons, isn’t there? Maybe it’s the new start and sense of possibility that make us long for a refresh – a wardrobe refresh, that is. Yep, spring has well and truly sprung out of the depths of a chilly winter and straight into our wishlists. Top of the priority pile is a new pair of trainers. Our most recent drop is proof that there’s a shoe for every occasion. Here are our top five.

#1: THE SNEAKERINA

Sneakerina’ may be an Americanism (‘trainerina’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it) but the appeal is universal. PUMA's Speedcat version of the trainer/ballet flat hybrid combines the best of both worlds. This dusty-blue pair is panelled with croc-effect leather, secured with slim crisscrossing straps and rests on a springy rubber sole – the traction underside is a callback to the OG Speedcat’s roots as a Formula 1 racetrack shoe. And if that wasn't enough, we've got different colourways you can check out, too.

#2: THE REFINED PAIR

Refined, barely-there sneakers are the real deal this spring, and you can’t get more grown-up than ARKET's. Paying homage to the brand’s Scandi roots, this cool, minimal pair has a super-slim sole and a white mesh upper edged with textured suede tape. The styling possibilities are rich, thanks to the see-through mesh – get sleek with tonal, semi-sheer tights or flout the rules by going sockless.

#3: THE CHUNKY CLASSIC

Slim-soled shoes are still having a moment in the sun, but chunky retro pairs are due a do-over. These New Balance 509 trainers are a little more low-key than the brand's usual Y2K-elite styles, but they still pack in technical features like reflective uppers and sturdy ABZORB midsoles. The chunky black soles add a point of interest too. Wear yours with 00s-appropriate baggy jeans.

4: THE UNEXPECTED PAIR

If the devil’s in the details, Nike’s Sprint Sister trainers are especially sinful. We have several colourways but this one is special, and a closer look will reveal why. First up is the double-laced design – plus, the right shoe has different colours to the left, adding to the unexpected look. Next: the signature Swoosh, which is perforated with laser-cut eyelets, revealing a peep of the matte upper. They’re an instant conversation starter, so wear them when you’re feeling sociable.

#5: THE MARY-JANE

If you’re after ultrafeminine trainers that’ll go with floaty midi dresses as well as your cargo trousers, may we introduce you to adidas Originals’ Samba OG Mary-Jane trainers? This style has been around for a minute (and sold out just as quick), but the latest version has a pretty floral-jacquard upper and is accented with silver trademark stripes – perfect for springtime 'fits.
