4 STEPS TO COOL-GIRL HIKING STYLE

If you've been feeling like everyone is on a hiking trip in the Dolomites or the Swiss Alps recently, it's because they are. Our socials are flooded with pictures of snow-topped mountains and grazing cows right now, and something has become apparent: hiking style has had a major glow-up. We're all familiar with gorpcore by now, but the girls are taking things up a notch. If you follow @sabriinab___ or @holliemercedes, you'll know what we're talking about. If you don't, go take a look! Running has been the favoured sport of social media over the past few years, but hiking is coming for its crown, and we're very much here for it.

Can you picture it: a woman in matching raingear, traipsing through the rocky terrain of a mountainous landscape? Well, you could be her – the object of everyone’s sartorial envy. And it’s easier than you might think. Just opt for weatherproof pieces you’ll actually want to wear in any forecast. If the following items prove anything, it’s that practicality shouldn’t impede aesthetics, so keep reading for a foolproof guide on dressing for your next hike. Step to it!

#1: WEAR-ANYWHERE RAINCOATS

The secret to keeping your hiking gear chic is to go for an understated, streamlined layer that pairs well with anything. Take a puffer coat, for example. This simple silhouette will keep you dry as a bone and sleek on the go. Brands like The North Face and Columbia will be your best friend here – most styles are water and windproof, with high-tech fabrics made for the mountains (and they look the part, too). Earthy tones are trending this season, so we’re reaching for forest greens and mushroom browns. And if you fancy mixing up your average rain mac, patent finishes are apt for your next excursion.

#2: PRACTICAL (AND STYLISH) SHOES

Of course, if we’re getting our steps in we’d better consider the feet – footwear, to be specific. Striking a balance between comfy, stylish and durable might sound like a complex task, but a good pair of weatherproof trainers will always come in handy. Salomon and Nike serve simultaneous style points, but whatever you choose, focus on something simple in colour and comfy in shape. The rest will fall into place.

#3: COMPLIMENTARY ACCESSORIES

We’ve kept things rather minimal thus far – a failsafe way to keep your hiking gear from looking haphazard. But there’s still room to have fun with accessories. In fact, it's arguably the most important step when it comes to spicing up your hiking style. Bring a pop of print with your headgear or reach for knitted hoods to indulge in the season’s love affair with all things cosy. Finish things off with retro wraparound sunglasses for a sporty edge. Trust us, you’ll be the talk of the trail.

Serious strides call for serious reinforcements (we’re talking snacks, water and some reading material), so easy-wear bags are on the agenda. These waterproof styles will keep your belongings warm and dry without impinging on your look, and with plenty of handy pockets, you’ll have no shortage of storage space. But of course, if you're heading on a serious hike, you can't go wrong with a backpack either.
