#1: SCARVES WORN ALL OVER

A good scarf is akin to a good coffee; when cold weather sets in, it’s something warm to gear you up for the day. But this season, the focus has shifted from heavy wool fabrics to sleek satin styles. And what was once the domain of the neck has become fair game for any aspect of your outfit. Whether it’s tied around the waist to break up your separates or adding some flair to your everyday bag, the patterned square scarf is still your most versatile accessory.

#2: TIGHTS + MICRO SHORTS

Another darling of the ‘ber months, tights usually conjure memories of the school gates. But this fashion week proved they’re far from childish. We love how much fun you can have with this underrated piece, with a range of colours, textures and patterns ready to mix up your look. If you’re not quite ready to wave goodbye to summer style (we’re looking at you, shorts), then tights are the perfect way to kick your wardrobe into transitional mode.

#3: WHITE DRESSES, FOR AUTUMN/WINTER? YEP

Oh, we do love an unexpected trend – and this year it was white dresses that made the most surprising statement. The concept of a pale gown billowing under the summer sun is clearly old hat, because these floaty numbers turned out in droves throughout fashion week. Sheer styles paired with sturdy boots created a fun clash of textures, while faux fur and trainers added some transitional edge to lightweight looks. We also loved the pairing of frocks with socks and ballet flats – a fun nod to schoolgirl style that welcomes the new season with open arms.

#4: RELAXED PREP

Speaking of schoolgirl style – it’s no secret that autumn is the domain of preppy fashion. From plaid to pleats, this time of year is often signposted by sleek cuts and smart silhouettes. But 2025 is taking a more relaxed approach. London’s latest street-style icons opted for undone blouses, slouchy layers and unexpected pairings, giving new meaning to the term ‘out of office’. If these looks are anything to go by, we’ll be dressing half-in and half-out of our formal attire for the foreseeable.

#5: CINCHED JACKETS + STATEMENT SKIRTS

Leaning heavily into a clash of soft and hard silhouettes, this trend combines boyish or tailored jackets with a statement midi skirt. Finding the perfect outer layer for autumn is a mission in itself, but it seems a cinched waist is the first port of call. Tailored styles give more room to play with heavy trending fabrics like leather and suede, while avoiding an entirely formless look. Plus, it’s always a bonus that during times of unpredictable weather, you can ditch the jacket to reveal a lighter look underneath.

#6: LOTS OF LAYERING

As the temperature inevitably starts to drop, our annual task of navigating layers begins with abandon. If this week’s best looks are anything to go by, you can pause on the heavy knitwear and reach for slip skirts instead. It might sound improbable, but a combination of sleek layers and lace with more suitably seasonal pieces like leather jackets, blazers and jeans make for a surprisingly satisfying mishmash. Finish things off with a small bag and simple shoes so your outfit can do most of the talking. This is the blueprint for transitional layering if we ever saw one.
