EVERY SUNGLASSES SHAPE YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SUMMER
By Emma Strawbridge, 19 May 2025
There’s no accessory that elevates an outfit quite like a pair of sunglasses. They’ve been every it-girl’s plus-one since forever – creating the perfect way to go incognito after a heavy night or to hide from the eyes of the press. The cool factor is undeniable, and obviously there’s the practicality: UV protection, anti-glare, polarised lenses etc. But right now, we’re here to break down the most covetable shapes of SS25. From the reworked aviator to next-gen frames, here are seven of the best to know for summer.
#1: OVERSIZED EVERYTHING

We’ve got the boho resurgence to thank for this one. These oversized pairs will go perfectly with your romantic dresses, fringed bags and cowboy boots for festival season. Opt for squared frames or something round – whichever suits your face shape more – it really doesn’t matter, as long as they’re XXL. For reference, see the huge butterfly frames on Chloè’s SS25 runway – extra points for earthy 70s shades and ombré tinted lenses.

#2: THE NEW CAT-EYE

Possibly one of the most flattering shapes out there, cat-eye sunglasses remain a go-to for SS25. From angular styles at Alexander McQueen to rounded-off frames at Moschino, this season anything goes with the cat-eye silhouette – the more drama, the better. White and yellow frames are trending too, so cop yours in a statement hue for any holidays in the diary.

#3: TINTED LENSES

Another call to the 70s, tinted lenses – specifically yellow – are everywhere right now. A firm favourite of Rihanna's, these styles typically come in an aviator silhouette, but they’ve got more range than that. Find a shape that you love and shop it with a tint. Don’t forget about the other hues though, blues and pinks are cool-girl approved, too.

#4: 90s MINIMALISM

Everyone knows these frames. The preferred choice of Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, this style is slim, sleek and best with dark-tinted lenses. They’re a true nod to the 90s – try them with a rectangular or oval finish, and pair with your favourite off-duty-model outfit formula: a blazer, white tee, blue jeans and loafers.

#5: FUTURE-FACING

Prada, Acne Studios, Balenciaga… every major fashion house is spotlighting next-gen frames that colour outside the lines, and we like it. From the wraparound mask silhouettes to avante-garde cycling styles masquerading as everyday sunglasses, it’s officially the season to make your eyewear the main character. If your personal style combines gorpcore and grunge, you’re guaranteed to love these.

#6: FLIGHT MODE: ON

If the classic aviator is your bag, we have no qualms with that. It’s a tried-and-tested shape and it’s getting its rightful dues thanks (again) to the return of boho. An icon in its own right, the aviator dates to the mid-1950s with origins in the US military, where they were the choice of pilots. Squared-off styles are dominating this season, but if the more traditional pilot styles are what you’re leaning towards – we’ve got those too.

#7: OVAL, ALWAYS

Oval silhouettes are also a contender for the style of 2025. A side-effect of the corpcore trend, these frames are always on the smaller side and librarian-esque. You’ve seen the viral blue-light glasses everywhere, right? Well, these are the sunglasses counterpart. We’re positive they’ll be a mainstay in every Euro-summer wardrobe.
