MODEST-SUMMER DRESSING: ALL THE PIECES YOU NEED

We're officially nearing the end of summer, but that shouldn't stop you from dressing to impress. Rain or shine, sometimes a bikini or denim shorts aren’t always the no.1 choice. If you prefer a bit more coverage, here are some tips for achieving stylish modest looks – featuring essentials like maxi clothing and long-sleeve shirts, and how to master the art of layering.

MAXI SKIRTS

ASOS EDITION bias maxi skirt in ombre print, £80

From bias-cut satin skirts with that Carrie-Bradshaw drape we all know and love, to A-line puffier skirts for extra volume, a maxi skirt is a future-proof and versatile must-have. We recommend styling them with a white T-shirt and sandals; think Birkenstocks, Tevas or Steve Maddens, alongside a stack of gold for an easy and effective day-to-night look.

MAXI DRESSES

ASOS DESIGN satin high neck maxi dress in floral print, £70

The older sister to the maxi skirt is of course, the maxi dress. For a modest take on this classic, look out for a floral print, long sleeves and an A-line shape. Flowers have been fashion’s favourite accent in 2024 – you probably have a hibiscus claw clip and a pair of orchid heels floating around – so why not lean fully into bouquet dressing with a flower-pendant necklace or two?

UNDER LAYERS

Miss Selfridge legging co-ord in leopard print, £20

We’re officially in the phase of fashion where sometimes skin-tight leggings + a racer crop top > everything else. For extra coverage, layer statement pieces on top. For example, wear leopard-print leggings underneath a denim skirt for that Lizzie McGuire Y2K flair, or toss a long-sleeved linen shirt atop a tank top to stay cool and covered up.

CO-ORDS

ASOS EDITION Curve satin short sleeve co-ord, £60

Co-ords come in tons of styles and they’re almost *too* easy to pop on and accessorise - case in point: this oversized watercolour print by ASOS Edition. If short sleeves aren’t your cup of tea, borrow from skater style and wear a long-sleeve white tee underneath. Finish off with a supersized bag and some kitten heels to elevate this look for fancier plans.

OVERSIZED SHIRTS

ASOS DESIGN oversized shirt in blue and white stripe, £28

Summer ’24 is all about nostalgia – we’re talking gingham, bloomers and of course, the oversized dad shirt. Tap into the nautical trend by opting for a blue or pinstriped design, or beige for serving resort-ready realness. When a day out with the girls is on the sched, a pair of boyfriend jeans and some crisp sneakers will *always* land.
