FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO SELF TAN

Along with mastering the art of the spritz and building a bikini collection Dua Lipa would envy, achieving the perfect bronzed, radiant tan is up there on our summer bucket list. That said, it's important to stay safe in the sun. How do we get that glow without risking our skin? Fake tan, of course. With our guide, patchiness and sun damage will be a thing of the past. Keep scrolling for all the products you’ll need and why we love them, from SPF to shimmering glow drops.

START BY EXFOLIATING

Before we talk tanning at all, we’ll need a brisk scrub. Exfoliating helps to smooth the surface of your skin, which means a streak-free finish for your tan. There are two major types, so experiment with both to find out what’s right for you. Physical exfoliants like sugar scrubs have tiny particles that are extra-effective at fighting dirt and grime. For a gentler approach, try scrubs formulated with exfoliating chemicals like salicylic and lactic acid. Make sure to pay extra attention to areas that aren’t always covered by your clothes – think your knees, ankles, elbows, hands and neck.

FIND THE RIGHT TAN FOR YOU

The tanning market is more advanced than ever, with unique formulas designed for different complexions and time constraints. If you’re new to self-tan, a classic mousse is often the easiest place to start: it’s reliable, fuss-free and widely trusted. For the tan innovators there are serums, which have a lighter feel and a softer, ‘like your skin but better’ finish. The right tan also depends on your routine. If you have time on your hands, gradually-developing formulas can last longer and deliver more natural results. Instant tans are perfect when you’re in a rush and need an immediate glow.

NAIL THE TECHNIQUE

Ever seen someone with bright orange hands after tanning? Ever been that person? That’s a sign to get a tanning mitt. Always use one of these bad boys instead of your bare hands and work the product in using circular motions. A tanning towel with loops is a worthy investment when your bestie isn’t available to help with your back. If you’re using wash-off tan, take your time in the shower after it’s developed. Thoroughly rinse it off with cool water until it runs clear.

DON'T FORGET YOUR SPF

Even if your chosen fake tan contains SPF, it always pays to apply a generous amount of sunscreen anyway. Here’s the science: SPF creates a barrier against harmful UV rays that can cause long-term sun damage, including hyperpigmentation and sunburn, which causes premature aging – and worse. SPF30 or above is a non-negotiable if you’re spending time in the sun. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours to hit the recommended sweet spot (Tip: spray sunscreens can make protection much easier when you’re on-the-go).

ADD A DOSE OF GLOW

You know that shimmery, sun-kissed look all the influencers seem to have? That’s thanks to glow drops and illuminating serums. This step may be optional, but it’s a must if you want to max out that glow-from-within look. Find one you love – ideally formulated with a spoonful of shimmer – and remember that a little goes a long way. We recommend using a small amount all over your body, then dabbing a little extra on your collarbone, shoulders, cupid’s bow and the tip of your nose.

CAN I TAN WITH DARK SKIN?

Of course you can! Teyana Taylor got her golden Grammys glow thanks to a session with spray-tanner-to-the-stars, Jimmy Coco. Tan can even complexions and add warmth to the skin, and it's especially effective if you tend to get paler in cloudier climates. The steps are all the same: just look for a darker shade than your skin tone.

TO FACE TAN OR NOT TO FACE TAN?

Face tanning can be controversial, but some people swear by it for an even head-to-toe look. Your face has different needs to the rest of your body so ideally you’d go for a dedicated face tanner. If you’re partial to foundation and concealer, secure some in a matching shade to your body, or use bronzer to bring that warmth into your face instead.

CAN I USE MOISTURISER WITH FAKE TAN?

Absolutely. A good moisturiser increases your hydration levels, meaning your fake tan will apply evenly. A non-greasy moisturiser is key to avoiding streaks and patches – just don’t moisturise immediately before applying your tan. Leave it at least two hours beforehand, so all that hydration has a chance to settle in.
