THE STYLE EDIT

ASOS CHATS TO EMILY SHAK

By Amelia Bell, 16 December 2019

With 957k Instagram followers and counting, Emily Shak is the Scottish fashion influencer who’s on everyone’s radar right now. Known for her unique style, Shak is always switching up her look – going from low-key sweatpants mixed with party sequins one day to XL hoodies and over-the-knee boots the next.

For our December style edit, we asked Emily to pick all her fave ASOS pieces. To find out more, we chatted to the model and blogger about what her style is all about, new-season trends and her glam beauty tips.

How would you describe your look?
My style is pretty versatile, and it really depends on my mood or where I’m going. I always like to be comfortable, so I tend to wear things oversized, and then maybe add a belt to adjust the fit slightly. During winter, my everyday look tends to be baggy joggers, a cropped hoodie and a cool, longline coat with trainers. Or, I’ll wear a loose-fit knit dress with tights, Dr. Martens and an oversized leather jacket.

What trends are you loving right now?
I love mixing chunky-knit jumpers with vinyl bottoms; it’s a comfy yet sexy look that can be worn with trainers or dressed up with a heel. I’m also a sucker for sequins during the festive season – it’s the one time of year I love to invest in a few statement sparkly pieces, whether it’s a beautiful dress or a blazer. As for accessories, two of my fave trends right now are bucket hats and tiny bags. I was a little sceptical at first, but I’ve grown to love them!

How do you mix up your style?
My day-to-night style can be switched up by simply adding some extra accessories, like chunky gold necklaces and rings. For a more elevated evening look, I’ll add a pair of heels and add a clutch bag. I’ll sometimes even throw on heels and a blazer with my joggers.

What are your favourite pieces from your style edit?
It’s hard to choose just one, because my edit ranges from tracksuits to full-length sequin dresses. But the camel coat with sherpa detailing really stands out for me, and looks amazing with black boots, light distressed mom jeans and a black crop top. I also love the long-sleeved embellished mini dress, which is perfect for party season. I’d wear this with a barely-there, knee-high boot, or even tights, and team with black ankle boots. There’s also a beautiful lace crop top I paired with leather high-waisted trousers. Again, this is a very transitional outfit, which is perfect day or night, and I love the contrast between the edgy trousers and the more delicate top.

What was your thought process when choosing the pieces?
I wanted to make sure I covered everything from daywear to evening, and chose pieces that weren’t just seasonal, but could be worn all year round. It’s so important to me to show how something like a sequin skirt (which would usually be associated with eveningwear) can also be dressed down with a chunky knit, blazer and trainers.

What are your favourite Face + Body products right now?
I recently tried the Laura Mercier Body Wash and fell in love with the formula and scent; I’m obsessed with skincare, so I love when I find something new and especially when it smells like a dessert. I’m also loving Bondi Sands Self-Tanning Foam and the Too Faced Gingerbread Extra Spicy Limited Edition Eyeshadow Palette – the colours are dreamy!

Do you have any beauty tips you want to share?
I get asked a lot about my lipstick choice... I religiously use MAC’s Kinda Sexy Matte Lipstick paired with the brand’s Spice Lip Pencil and a good lip gloss. Once I’ve applied my mascara, without dipping the brush back in the tube, I use the excess to lightly brush over my brows in an upward motion to make them darker and fluffy.
