INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

3 AUTUMN WEDDING GUEST OUTFITS THAT COVER EVERY DRESS CODE

Somewhere between summer’s outdoor ceremonies and the full-blown festivities of a winter shindig, you’ll find the autumn wedding. This is often an elevated, grown-up affair. So if you’re the lucky recipient of an RSVP, you’ll need a suitable outfit. Lightweight linens won’t do, and heavy velvets can feel too stuffy. Not to mention navigating a potentially demanding dress code. So, how do you nail the perfect autumn wedding suit? Don’t sweat it. We’ve decoded the most common formalwear rules (and tell you which ones to safely break).

BLACK TIE WITH A TWIST

The black tie dress code is elegant in its simplicity – a dark tuxedo or dinner jacket, a smart shirt, formal shoes – but that doesn’t necessarily mean your suit should be predictable. Autumn is a great time to lean into suits that take up a bit more real estate, like ASOS DESIGN’s double-breasted two-piece. The fit is relaxed, so it won’t feel stiff, and the super-subtle puppytooth texture gives the fabric interest whilst staying on theme. Slightly cropped trousers are perfect for showing off shoes, so we’ve gone for polished penny loafers. A metallic lapel pin finishes the look nicely.

AUTUMN COLOUR AND TEXTURE

An autumn palette is ideal for suiting – think moss tones, rich berries, autumn leaves and, of course, brown. The latter has an unfair reputation as one of the least exciting colours in the paintbox, but this Topman textured suit says otherwise. While the shape is impeccable – a double-breasted blazer balanced by wide-leg trousers – it’s really the speckled brown fabric that’s the star of the show. Team it with tonal accessories, like a tie and polished derby shoes. This look is an excellent all-rounder for all sorts of wedding ceremonies.

THE COCKTAIL DRESS CODE 'FIT

Perhaps the most confusing dress code you’ll encounter at a wedding is ‘cocktail attire’. What exactly is it? This increasingly popular theme is often conflated with smart-casual, and while that’s not completely wrong, there’s a little more to it. Cocktail attire is a semi-formal dress code that balances traditional suiting with personal style, so it's a golden opportunity to push the boat out. Try a jacket and trousers in different colours – like autumnal green and beige – or opt for different shades of the same tone. And while you’re at it, why not try a print like Polo Ralph Lauren’s striped shirts – or perhaps a croc-effect loafer? Bringing a touch of personality to your usual formalwear is encouraged with this dress code.
