GROOMING TIPS

GIVE YOUR SKIN A FRESH START THIS AUTUMN

It’s officially Q4, which means everyone’s turning over a new leaf. ‘The great lock in’, as social media’s dubbed it, isn’t exclusive to uniwork or the gym. It extends into your skincare, too. As the temperature drops and central heating makes a comeback, your skin takes a hit. Cooler air contains less moisture, which can lead to irritations and breakouts. But fear not – a few simple tweaks to your existing routine will have your skin feeling its best throughout autumn and winter. Scroll for our five top tips.

#1: SWITCH TO A GENTLE CLEANSER

Soaps and foaming face washes do a decent job of removing dirt, grime and excess oil, but they also send your skin’s natural moisture down the drain. And when the weather is less forgiving, you’ll want products that keep moisture in rather than out. So, switch to a creamy, non-foaming cleanser instead. You’ll still get a thorough wash, sans that tight feeling afterwards (usually a sign of dehydrated skin). Non-foaming cleansers are especially good for dry skin, but oily skin can also benefit from them too.

#2: KEEP MICELLAR WATER CLOSE

Between lunchtime workouts, packed commutes and weekend sports sessions, sweat and grime can easily build up. That’s where micellar water comes in. Nowadays, it’s best known as a makeup remover, but it was actually developed in Paris as a gentle cleansing alternative to the city’s notoriously hard water. 100 years later, and it’s still perfect for freshening up between cleanses. Bioderma's micellar water is one of our favourites – the handy pump-top bottle makes applying it to cotton pads easy and mess-free. Toss a small bottle in your bag for an on-the-go pick-me-up, and top with a lightweight moisturiser.

#3: GIVE TIRED EYES A HELPING HAND

As daylight hours dwindle, dark undereyes start to surface. Naturally, there’s no better medicine for tired eyes than a solid 8 hours of sleep, but an eye treatment always helps. Formulas with caffeine will reduce puffiness, while niacinamide and vitamin C can brighten and even out the skin tone over time. Most eye creams and serums are best applied just before moisturiser or SPF. But as always, follow the instructions of your product for the best results.

#4: STICK TO A GOOD MOISTURISER

After applying your lotions and potions, you need a moisturiser to lock them in. The right one should maintain moisture throughout the day and strengthen your skin barrier at the same time. If you’ve got dry skin, go for richer cream formulas. For oily or combination skin, stick to lightweight gel-like or hybrid moisturisers. Either way, humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerine are worth looking out for. These powerful ingredients attract water molecules and bind to them, so your skin feels hydrated for longer.

#5: SHOW YOUR LIPS SOME LOVE

Cold weather makes your lips more vulnerable to dryness and chapping. Formulas containing shea butter, ceramides, squalane and other hydrating ingredients can minimise moisture loss and support healing. Prevention is better than cure, so use a lip balm or mask consistently, rather than waiting until your lips feel rough. It’s worth having a few on hand – one in your coat pocket, one in your bag and maybe one on your bedside table.
