YOUR AUTUMN BASICS PLAYBOOK

Autumn gives a lot of airtime to layers like jackets and knitwear, but the pieces doing the most work are usually the ones hiding underneath. Having a solid lineup of basics will make getting dressed in the (considerably darker) mornings easier.

Your basics are the everyday essentials you reach for on repeat, layer up with when the forecast is questionable, and seriously miss when laundry day takes them all out of rotation at once. So, before you start thinking about your big autumn investment pieces, let’s get the foundations right.

#1: VESTS

The vest is arguably the unsung hero of your wardrobe. It adds an extra layer of warmth without bringing bulk into the equation, and comes in particularly handy beneath shirts, whether you're wearing them open or they're a little more sheer than anticipated. Stick to neutrals like black, white, beige etc. for maximum outfit mileage. For autumn, style them with light layers like open shirts, workwear-inspired jackets or even a sheer knit.

#2: T-SHIRTS

Good-quality tees are essential all year, but as we go into autumn you'll want to look for weightier fabrics like heavyweight jerseys and textured waffle knits – they'll bring warmth and structure to your looks. Henley tees are everywhere right now, and the button fastening is great for bringing a bit of interest where classic tees might feel plain. When it comes to fit, regular and boxy styles are particularly easy to layer, while long-sleeve T-shirts bring extra coverage, and the hint of a cuff under jumpers and shirts also feels elevated.

#3: BOXERS

Not to state the obvious, but boxers are an essential. And when something is going to be worn so much, fabric and fit are doing a lot of heavy lifting. Breathable cotton-rich jersey is always a safe bet, while a little stretch (courtesy of elastane) will give you freedom to move without sacrificing shape. Pay attention to the waistband too: supportive, soft and barely noticeable is the aim. As for multipacks? Consider this your permission to stock up. They might not be the most thrilling purchase in your basket, but you'll thank yourself later.

Much like boxers, socks are one of those basics you only really think about when you haven’t got the right pair. And once your autumn footwear rotation comes out, you'll need some you can rely on. Take your pick from breathable cotton-rich pairs that will survive a full day in boots, classic white ribbed styles and colourful options you can show off with loafers.
