WAIT, DOES PEP GUARDIOLA HAVE… GOOD STYLE?

Football managers usually operate in the shadow of their team. Players are the stars, after all. But it’s the managers who pull the strings. This life on the sidelines invites an understated, simple wardrobe that avoids distracting from the beautiful game. Whether that’s Arteta’s svelte jackets and pin-neat eyebrows, or Murat Yakin’s roster of chinos, these guys tend to dress like they’re headed to a shift at the office. Smart, certainly – but nothing to write home about.
That is unless you’re Pep Guardiola. The departing boss of Man City who’s clearly made it his mission to leave the job in style. It hasn’t always been this way. Pep was always a lover of the puffer jacket and skinny jeans combo – a popular uniform in the manager camp. But he’s recently swapped them out for relaxed flannel shirts, straight-leg trousers and a roster of great boots. We’ve broken down our favourite Pep looks below with notes on how to recreate them – just in time for a sport’s biggest season.

Technical jackets have remained a wardrobe staple since they first emerged in the late 70s. But a recent sportswear revival has invited new and creative ways to style them. Pep placed himself firmly in the ‘those who get it’ demographic when he rocked up in this navy number and black tailored trousers. The chunky burgundy dress shoes round out an impressive balance of smart and casual that’s rarely seen outside of fashionable circles – let alone a football pitch.

A REALLY GOOD TROUSER

Turtleneck jumpers might not be top of your summer shopping list, but Pep’s checkered trousers certainly caught our eye. Every man should (and could) recreate this timeless tailoring. The subtle pattern brings a certain je ne sais quoi without feeling over the top, and the soft brown shade is a nice change from black that still leans neutral. It’s the kind of light-touch choice that signals a man who knows his way around a wardrobe. Say what you want about his managerial skills, but there’ll be no red cards for this ensemble.
