AN ODE TO ROMEO BECKHAM'S MET GALA SUIT

When the Met Gala dress code is ‘Fashion is Art’, anything can happen. What did happen on the menswear front was leather, and plenty of it, from Luke Evans' head-to-toe moto chauffeur get-up to Nicholas Hoult’s stricter black-and-grey tailoring. But the real leather-clad highlight of the night? Romeo Beckham’s Burberry ‘fit, which combined the trend with a traditional black tux. Into the look? Here’s how to put your own spin on it for any upcoming occasions.

The real power of this look is how matchy-matchy it is without swerving into costume party territory, and you can make that your own by focusing on your accents. You might normally coordinate your belt with your shoes, but Romeo’s gone a step further with a black leather shirt and tie that sit beside the suit jacket’s leather lapels. This creates a tightly focused block that doesn’t overpower everything else. If leather feels a bit too much for summer, you can swap it out for something else, too. If you’ve got a tux with satin lapels, go for a satin shirt and tie. White lapels? White shirt and tie. Floral lapels… you get the concept.

#2: DECIDE ON A SUIT

Romeo’s suit is a classic double-breasted black tux. Slim – but not too slim – with trousers that offset the jacket’s more powerful proportions. For this look, it’s best to stick to dark block colours. Black will always be the classic, followed closely by navy, but you can play around with berry suits, forest-green suits – whatever fits your vibe. It’ll work as long as your shirt and tie are the same shade.

A look as powerful as this one only needs a few finishing touches – you don’t want to pull the focus away from your shirt and tie. Make sure your shoes are the same colour as your suit to keep everything looking harmonious. Finally, jewellery. Romeo's gone simple up top with diamond studs and a bit more creative elsewhere, with a tennis bracelet and a suite of rings.
