INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

WHAT TO WEAR TO WATCH THE FOOTBALL

June 2026 is almost here, and we’re getting ready for one of the world’s largest sports tournaments. Office sweepstakes have been organised, pubs with massive TVs have been scoped out and – most crucially – football jerseys have been purchased. But what to wear with said jerseys? If you’re looking for inspiration, look no further. We’ve got a different 'fit for every match in the season.

THE JERSEYS

Meet the England home and away stadium shirts, brought to you by Nike. Both reworks of classics, they’re embroidered with a gold star over the crest – symbolic of the country’s 1966 victory. The fabric on both is woven with the iconic lions, but the motif really stands out on the red away shirt. Inside the collar you’ll see the words ‘Happy and Glorious’, which are lifted from the national anthem.

Maybe the England top isn’t your thing, and that’s ok – we have plenty of football shirts to choose from.

MATCH 1: ENGLAND VS CROATIA, 17 JUNE

The first match of the tournament is a good time to get back to the 90s, when football really became embedded in culture – especially in the Britpop movement. Think mid-wash straight-leg jeans, Umbro jackets or low-profile adidas Originals trainers like Gazelles or Rekords. Looking for a conversation starter at half-time? Try testing the resilience of your friend group by reviving the ‘Oasis or Blur?’ argument.

MATCH 2: ENGLAND VS GHANA, 23 JUNE

Not everyone will want to be at the pub at 9pm on a Tuesday, when England KOs against Ghana. For those of us who’ll be watching the match at home, a cosy and casual look is essential. Pair your jersey with oversized joggers – anything made from French terry will feel extra comfy. Upgrade your sliders game with tie-dyed socks, and you’re ready for the next 90 minutes.

It’s Saturday night! If you’re in the mood to smarten up your jersey, tuck it in to tailored trousers and secure with a leather belt. Trainers are good, but a pair of loafers will properly complete the look. If you really want to mean business, wear yours with a matching blazer and make a suit out of it.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY JERSEY IS AUTHENTIC?

Buy yours from a trusted source e.g. ASOS (hi!). Replica jerseys in the wild are rife, so avoid thin or shiny fabric, blurry prints and crooked stitching. The real deal will also have a product tag sewn on the front.

WHAT KIND OF 'FIT SHOULD I GO FOR?

This really depends on how you want to wear your shirt. If you’re the kind to tuck yours in, a slimmer fit will do. If you like to let it all hang out, go oversized. Take your regular size for a good all-rounder. Stay away from a slim fit if you’re planning to play football as well as watch it, or that reassuring snug feeling will soon be a tight squeeze.

ANY STYLING TIPS?

Let your shirt do the talking. You should follow your heart with your ‘fit – but you won’t necessarily need an England jersey, a hat, and the matching pants too. Keep it simple.
