WHAT TO WEAR SKIING

You’ve booked your chalet on the slopes – now it’s time to sort your looks. Whether you’re a beginner tackling your first run, or a seasoned skier revisiting an alpine haunt, these essentials for what to wear skiing have your back. We’ve picked the pieces that’ll keep you warm, dry and – most importantly – stylish during après-ski and beyond. Expect a rundown of ski staples, plus we chat to Laurie Thompson, Senior Assistant Buyer for 4505 to get insights on this season’s must-have men’s ski wear.

WHAT CLOTHES DO YOU NEED TO TAKE SKIING?
Wondering what layers to wear skiing? Packing for the slopes is all about performance-led layering. As Laurie explains, ‘The 4505 men's ski and snowboard collection brings a modern take to ski essentials,’ highlighting key pieces like the insulated puffer suit and faux-fur-trimmed MA1 bomber. These technical layers ensure warmth, breathability and waterproofing – because no one likes getting damp in the snow. Your skiwear checklist? Start with a jacket, salopettes (AKA ski trousers), thermal base layers and warm gloves. Nail that formula and you’ll conquer any mountain in style.

SKI JACKETS

Your outer layer is both your first line of defence against the elements and the anchor of your entire look. A men’s ski coat with proper insulation will lock in heat, while a lighter jacket gives flexibility if you’re layering with a fleece underneath – plus, it saves valuable suitcase space. Laurie’s top pick? This faux-fur trimmed bomber jacket: a timeless silhouette with a flash of orange lining that stands out on the slopes. Oh, and it comes in a fitting pine green, too. ‘Look to colour-block insulated shell outerwear styles in green, ice blue and black,’ she adds.

SKI SUITS

For those who like to remove the guesswork from their ski wardrobe, a ski suit is the ultimate all-in-one statement. Look for a piece that’s sleek rather than bulky, with zip fastenings, insulation and a sharp cut. 4505’s suit stands out for its technical detailing and minimal design, featuring water-repellent fabric, a fixed hood, ski-pass pocket and zipped cuffs. Prefer to make a statement? The OOSC 80s-style suit will deliver the right amount of nostalgia to any piste – no outfit co-ordination needed.

SKI TROUSERS

Once you’ve got the jacket down, you’ll need the bottom half to work just as hard. Whether you call them salopettes or ski pants, they are nonetheless essential to your kit. Go for waterproof fabrics with adjustable waists for comfort and elastic cuffs to keep snow firmly outside. Choose a skinny leg for a supportive fit, or a straight cut if you prefer more free movement. Pro tip – bib-pants with internal braces and reinforced knees mean your ‘fit won’t budge. And make sure they’ve got plenty of pockets for your phone, cards, and even snacks.

BASE LAYERS

So what do men wear under ski pants? The answer lies in technical thermals that wick moisture away, regulate temperature and move with your body. When deciding what to wear under ski pants or a jacket, cotton is a no-go – it traps damp and chills fast. Instead, choose seamless base layers like this thermal roll neck from 4505, designed to reduce friction and maximise comfort. ‘Both skiing and snowboarding are serious workouts,’ Laurie notes, ‘so base layers that stretch and breathe are key.’

ACCESSORIES

Accessories shouldn’t be an afterthought, especially when it comes to skiing. Gloves, socks, goggles and a neck gaiter are must-haves to keep the elements at bay. Touchscreen-friendly gloves are ideal if you plan to share your skills on socials, while cushioned socks will keep you comfortable all day. And forget scarves – a neck gaiter or balaclava trumps it every time – streamlined, secure and way more practical than a free-sprawling accessory flapping in the wind.

WHAT TO BRING SKIING WHEN IT’S YOUR FIRST TIME
If you’re new to the slopes, start with the essentials: a waterproof jacket, insulated trousers, thermal layers and gloves. It’s about investing in a few smart, weatherproof pieces that make your first trip as comfortable as it is memorable – as Laurie notes: 'Balancing function and style is important, and the 4505 ski collection delivers on-slope and après style with warmth and practicality.'

WHAT NOT TO WEAR WHILE SKIING
Ideally, you should stick to pro gear. There’s no room for denim on the mountain. Jeans absorb water and freeze fast, leaving you colder than you started. Avoid cotton base layers, too – they hold moisture and can quickly become uncomfortable.
