HOW TO TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY WARDROBE FROM DAY TO NIGHT

Men's holiday outfits can be tricky. Nothing ruins summer packing prep more than realising your suitcase is way too heavy, and it's hard to pack light when you've got seven days and seven nights to dress for. The answer? Outfits that work from day to night. Read on for the six pieces you need to get the most out of your capsule holiday wardrobe.

#1: A LIGHTWEIGHT JACKET

The easiest way to carry a daytime look over to the evening is to throw on a shacket or light jacket. Whether you're wearing something super casual like shorts and a T-shirt or an outfit that's a little more polished, think of them like a cheat code for instant elevation. The style is important, though – ditch anything too street or sports-aligned and opt for something clean and lightweight. It's perfect for a sunset dinner, keeps you warm during an evening breeze and will work with other looks in your holiday wardrobe, too.

#2: SUMMER-READY SHOES

While we love trainers, there's a time and a place for them. If you want to give your daytime look an evening feel, shoes are the way to do it. Whether it's loafers or mules (we like Birkenstocks), swapping your Sambas for smart shoes takes your outfit to the next level. You can afford to switch up the texture on holiday, so don't be afraid to break out woven suede styles.

#3: STATEMENT SUNGLASSES

Although small, accessories will elevate all manner of summer outfits, especially sunglasses. For days spent poolside or at the beach, you might want to opt for a sporty style that can withstand sweat – some types are even water-resistant. Switch to metal frames for a look that's better suited to dinner reservations.

#4: NEUTRAL LINEN TROUSERS

Depending on the destination, trousers may be out of the question for daytime. But where applicable, neutral linen pairs are key – they're super breathable, so will keep you cooler in warmer weather. For city-break sightseeing, style them casually with a T-shirt and sandals. As the evening begins to roll in, try a couple of simple hacks to elevate the look: add a shirt or crochet top for more dimension, and switch your shoes to a loafer or smarter trainer.

#5: A SOLID BASIC TEE

The ultimate foundation for any 'fit – regardless of where you're going or what you're doing – is a basic tee. Bonus points if it's white. Your plain white tee doesn't need anything added or subtracted to go from day to night. It's just that versatile. If you want to up the ante, pick a clean white polo shirt instead. It looks a little smarter than a tee, but you can still wear it with shorts and sandals during the day.

#6: AN ACCENT SHIRT FOR LAYERING

The accent shirt is the quickest and easiest way to add some personality to your suitcase without erring into 'whimsical' territory. For day-to-night looks, pick something short-sleeved. Printed shirts are good, but we're really loving embroidered styles this year – layered over tees, they add an extra note of texture and interest to otherwise simple outfits. Holiday clothes? Consider them sorted.
