This new, chunkier shape is based on an archive model from 1998 and real skate heads will recognise more than one throwback detail on the Vans Speed LS. Chunky padded tongues were the defining hallmark of the era, teamed with suede overlays and an updated cupsole. A real icon.

Utility-style pieces also make up a large part of this aesthetic. Skaters adopted hard-wearing pieces from workwear brands simply because they didn't rip as easily if they came tumbling off the board. The key to it is layering, like the gilet over the sweat and then adding even more pockets with the cargo shorts. This shorts style was MASSIVE in the 90s, and that's why we can't get enough of them today.
