SNEAKER SUNDAY
NIKE DUNK HIGH LIGHT BONE
By Nic Hayman, 14 May 2017
This week’s Sneaker Sunday is a rare breed, in that it has more pedigree off the court than on, despite having started life on the hardwood as college hoops equipment. Checking into the game this week is the Nike Dunk High in a new ‘Light Bone’ colourway.
Along with the Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1, with which the Dunk shares plenty of DNA, no other Nike sneaker has made such a seamless transition from sport to street, and in so many different circles. Fans repped their local teams with the myriad colourways produced to match college basketball uniforms, spurred on by the Swoosh’s legendary ‘Be True to Your School’ campaign. Hip-hop fans enjoyed collab editions from Wu-Tang, De La Soul and MF DOOM. Skaters wore them for the ankle protection and sticky grip. The Dunk has been everywhere, but the common appeal for all are its damn good looks.
The latest drop stays true to the original blueprint, with an all-leather upper, nylon tongue and clean colour blocking. This colourway is far less bombastic than many that have come out from the Dunk’s silhouette, which makes it an ideal sneaker to slide you into summer with a little subtlety. Embrace its roots with basketball shorts and an oversized tee, or break out your favourite blue denim and a varsity jacket for resident campus sneakerhead vibes.
