You don’t have to choose wacky graphics and clashing patterns to express your style this summer. Knowing how to wear basics right can result in an effortlessly cool getup that leaves others wondering exactly how you managed to look so good in a plain white tee and a simple pair of shorts. These celebrities have achieved strong looks with basic garments. We’re about to pin down exactly what makes each outfit pop.

David Beckham
True to his reputation as the man who never ever looks bad, David Beckham's casual athletic attire is an on-point offshoot of his usual unfussy public appearance. Keeping it monochrome in a white muscle-fit T-shirt is the secret here, with a backwards baseball cap and logo-emblazoned pair of shorts being the cool signature to Becks’ out-and-about ensemble.

Robert Pattinson
Twilight star-turned-indie-film-poster-boy Robert Pattinson is a master at mustering up strong looks that simultaneously appear to have been thrown together in seconds. Closer analysis reveals some careful colour matching - charcoal shoes are teamed up with a soft grey bomber jacket, while essential black trousers are paired with similarly shady accessories.

Game Of Thrones’ honourable hero looks fittingly righteous in this everyman outfit, composed entirely of wardrobe staples. Denim-on-denim might be an American classic, but the brown Chelsea boots are a reminder of the Londoner’s roots. Having become synonymous with his excellent beard and wildman mop, Kit’s personal choice of grooming is another shrewd way to reveal his personality while wearing basics.

Mr Tempah is another gent who knows how to do double denim, although his is a different look entirely: he places the focus on a playful pop of colour with those killer Nike trainers, highlighting his hip-hop roots. Breaking up the identically coloured faded denim garments with a crisp white long-sleeved shirt is another shrewd move from the rapper.

Forever inspiring approving nods with his impeccable threads, Ryan Gosling proves his basic fashion smarts with well-judged combinations of classic tailored garments in neutral shades. His appearance at Cannes last year epitomised the French Riviera feel, with a slick pinstriped pale blue shirt and brown chino combo that can easily be recreated while holidaying on the continent.
