KENDRICK LAMAR'S STYLE HITS
By Matt Glazebrook, 7 April 2017
It’s too soon to tell whether Kendrick Lamar’s next album will stand up to its universally-acclaimed predecessor, To Pimp A Butterfly, but its confirmed arrival on April 14 does give us the excuse to revisit some of the highlights from the style back catalogue of K-Dot – one of hip-hop’s less showy, but most consistently on-point, streetwear champs.
If we had double-denim game as strong as Lamar’s all-stonewash on-stage look from summer 2014, we’d sign our name in big letters on the wall behind us as well.
This deceptively simple getup from September 2014 is a masterclass in how to nail casual style for summer 2017. Statement plimsolls in bold, graphic prints are a key piece you’ll be reaching for again and again once the weather warms up, while ripped, loose-fit jeans – with a strong rolled cuff – are a comfy, cool alternative to the skinny-fit standard. An ace graphic-print tee and baseball cap, meanwhile, are timeless seasonal staples.
Sometimes, strong streetwear is all about a single statement piece backed up with an understated supporting cast. Step forward Kendrick Lamar’s geometric-print rain jacket from early 2015 – a garment that’ll not only keep you dry through the spring showers, but also, when teamed with all-black everything else, will have you looking as fresh as a meadow full of daffodils.
K-Dot’s ultra-wordy flow may set him apart from his hip-hop contemporaries, but the Compton MC isn’t above sharing a style or two with his rap rivals. This excellent Enfants Riches Déprimés customised checked shirt had already graced the shoulders of Kanye West and Jaden Smith when Kendrick layered it over hoodie in October 2016. Didn’t stop it looking ace, though.
Kendrick’s spring 2017 take on tonal, Scandi-inspired skate gear is so damn sharp that Top Dawg Entertainment CEO Anthony Tiffith has to follow him around whenever he wears it, just to make sure he doesn’t take someone’s eye out.
