THE FOOTNOTE: YEP, WEDGE TRAINERS ARE BACK

The wedge trainer has been stepping out at Fashion Week.

Once revered as a particularly freaky 2010s trend, the wedge sneaker has been spotted on a growing number of stars including zeitgeist queen Rachel Sennott. It’s also cropped up on runways at Ottolinger and been rebirthed by Puma as the Speedcat Wedge. Call me crazy (I’ll put it down to the heat) but I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic for these whacky shoes. So, if you also fancy slipping a toe in, you’ll find my favourite new styles below.

When Puma announced a wedge sneaker was joining its sellout Speedcat lineup, I knew it was curtains for the wedge deniers. These are the most high-profile iterations of a wedge sneaker since their 2010s heyday. And in a sleek chocolate brown with suede detail, they’ve piqued my interest. More than a decade ago these would’ve been styled with skinny jeans or balloon trousers, oversized sunglasses and huge hoops. Now? I’d opt for tailored bermudas, a simple tank and button-down shirt. It’s the perfect ode to classroom fashion – just all grown up.

Every artist has its critics. And every trend has its devotees. If you’re all-in on the wedge trainer comeback then the Bronx Jae-yy might be for you. These feature an exaggerated heel for extra elevation, three straps and a studded upper finished in versatile black or beige suede. They lean more ‘trainer’ than heel but still give you  those coveted extra inches. I’d roll these out with simple black hot pants, a baby tee and leather bomber jacket – the ideal ensemble for any day festivals or late-night parties you have on the horizon.
