INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

ONE-MINUTE OUTFITS FOR WHEN YOU CBA TO GET READY

I have a confession: I’m lazy – at least, I am when it comes to planning an outfit. I’m always buying pieces for one-off looks, then rummaging frantically through my overflowing wardrobe crying, ‘I have nothing to wear!’

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy: MVP of simple outfits.

After repeated mornings of clawing at my clothes rail, I’ve realised that all I need is a simple formula to fall back on. Think of it like cooking – we’re all guilty of ordering takeaway when faced with a sparse fridge, but with a little creativity and a few minutes in the kitchen, anyone can whip up a solid meal using basic ingredients (and a little spice). Below you’ll find five 60-second ‘fits for throwing on and feeling put together. You might be surprised at how many you already have in your fashion pantry.

OUTFIT #1: A TANK AND TAILORED TROUSERS

Decision fatigue is real – we have to get dressed every day, after all. Combine that with tired mornings and busy schedules, and you’d be forgiven for throwing on the first things to hand. But that’s what makes a tank and tailored trousers a dream daily uniform. Both are simple, understated, and a staple in any wardrobe. The tank says ‘comfy casual’, while the trousers smarten things up. Neutral colours like black, white, grey and beige make them infinitely wearable, easy to style with a bevy of shoes (flip flops, heels, trainers etc), and suitable for everywhere, from the office to apres-work drinks.

OUTFIT #2: A SHIRT AND OVERSIZED SHORTS

Another smart casual combo thats always pulls through is a shirt and bermuda shorts. The exaggerated length on the shorts makes them feel relaxed and elevated, so they’re a failsafe for summer. You can also go as formal as you fancy – tailored bermudas are especially flattering with trending wedge flip flops, while lightweight linens are great for sunny days and holiday dinners.

OUTFIT #3: A BLAZER AND A SATIN SKIRT

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good jacket, but finding the right one is my personal nightmare. As outfit toppers, they dictate the entire look, so I’m constantly searching for something fresh – and this quickly gets expensive. The solution is a simple and versatile jacket for layering over almost anything. That, my friends, is a blazer. They’re smart, but they’re also timeless and extremely flexible. Jeans make them feel more relaxed, while flowing satin skirts are a great summer alt. Casual accessories like sandals, a baseball cap or a woven bag will keep things from feeling too corporate.

The mecca of simple outfits is jeans and a classic t-shirt – you just cannot go wrong with denim and a white top. Whether you wear them as a duo or the basis for more elaborate layers, these staples will wait for you when all else has failed. Boxy, heavyweight t-shirts are particularly flattering with wide or relaxed straight-leg jeans. Finish with a simple belt and loafers and you’re good to go.

OUTFIT #5: A MINIMAL MAXI DRESS

Some say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I’d argue our true bestie is the simple maxi dress. Satin, cotton, or linen – no matter the fabric, a sweeping style sorts your whole look in one. They’re comfortable, flattering, and sophisticated. Frankly, there’s very little a good maxi dress can’t do. Wear yours with a beach tote and ballet flats in warm weather or layer under knits in autumn and winter. It’s a year-round winner.
