EVERYTHING ON OUR RADAR THIS MONTH

June! What a concept. No matter what the weather report says, this is when summer officially kicks off – as does a certain global football tournament. June’s major social concerns are holidays and festivals, but enjoying the best of the month doesn’t have to gobble up days on end. The time-poor among us can still access all the best cultural goings-on – here’s our selection.

TOY STORY 5 – 16 JUNE

Nostalgia klaxon! Beloved children’s toys and 90s icons, Woody and Buzz Lightyear, are now on their fifth silver-screen outing. So far, they’ve battled nightmare neighbours, rabid rare toy-collectors, and their own obsolescence, but they’re up against something bigger this time around – technology. Yes, their owner has got herself a smart tablet. Will she succumb to the infinite scroll? Not if they have anything to do with it.

A SUMMER OF SPORT – ALL MONTH
Between the football and the tennis, June is shaping up to be a big month for sports fans. With the time differences between the UK and North America, there will be relatively few clashes – you can have afternoon strawberries and cream in front of the TV and head to the pub to watch the match in the evening if you fancy. Golf and Formula 1 fans have big events coming up too, so there’s something for every armchair pundit.

OLIVIA RODRIGO, YOU SEEM PRETTY SAD FOR A GIRL SO IN LOVE – 12 JUNE
When Olivia Rodrigo isn’t prompting worldwide debate over the ethics of babydoll dresses, she’s making zeitgeist-capturing music. Her third studio album (third! Sour could have been yesterday) is out this month. You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love promises plenty of what Olivia calls ‘sad love songs’ – which seems correct, considering the album title. Get ready for a summer of yearning.

HARRY STYLES AT WEMBLEY STADIUM – 12 JUNE - 4 JULY
Chances are you already have a ticket to one of Harry Styles' whopping 12 dates at Wembley – it’s the longest run ever at the venue and will see more than a million people pass through the doors. P.S. The Together, Together London tour dates are supported by none other than the legend Shania Twain. Does that impress us much? You could say that.

THE SUMMER EXHIBITION AT THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS – 16 JUNE - 23 AUGUST

It is almost embarrassing how many blockbuster exhibitions are opening this month in London. Let’s start with a stalwart. The RA's summer exhibition has been mounted every year without a break since 1769 (!). Anyone can submit their work, so hobbyists rub shoulders with Turner Prize winners, and there’s always something surprising to see. It’s so comprehensive that there’s an in-exhibition bar, just in case you need a refreshment halfway through.

FRIDA: THE MAKING OF AN ICON AT THE TATE MODERN – 25 JUNE - 3 JANUARY

It’s been over 20 years since Tate Modern’s last Frida Kahlo exhibition and this one promises to be even more wide-ranging. Along with over 30 of the legendary Mexican painter’s works, you can also expect to see multiple responses to said works by major contemporary artists. The exhibition will also explore how Kahlo turned into a unibrowed style icon and major brand decades after her death.

MARILYN MONROE: A PORTRAIT AT THE NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY – 4 JUNE - 6 SEPTEMBER

Speaking of icons, you can’t get more iconic than Marilyn Monroe. To celebrate the centenary of the film star's birth, the National Portrait Gallery is exhibiting some of her most famous images as well as her books, scripts and clothes. You can also expect to see her immortalised in paint, with pieces by Andy Warhol and British Pop artist Pauline Boty.
